Recordings of the works in today's concert
Edvard Hagerup Grieg (1843-1907)
Norske Danser / Norwegian Dances Op 35 (1881)
1 Allegro marcato lively & accentuated [6:00]
4 Allegro molto very lively
For the first of these two dances we have selected a recording by the Adamar Piano Duo - Carmen Manera Guzmaán & Matthias Trachsel. The text on YouTube says they are playing a 1928 Feurich piano, but it is pretty clearly a Bosendorfer.
The recording of Dance No 4 is by Ashley Dao and Hanh Huynh of the Little Chopin School of Music in Garden Grove, California. The school advertises that it has a real piano in each of its 17 lesson rooms, two stages with "duelling grand pianos" plus a grand concert hall. They specialise in teaching piano and violin. Oh, and there are electronic keyboards with headphones in waiting areas so pupils can brush up on their playing while waiting for their lesson!

Charles-Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921)
arr for 4 hands by Ernest Guiraud (1837-1892)
Danse Macabre Op 40 (1874)
We may be cheating a little here by bringing you the two pianos in the Small Hall of the Moscow Conservatoire. The players are sisters Anatasia Gromoglasova (left) and Liubov Gromoglasova (right).
George Gershwin (b Jacob Gershwine, 1898-1937)
Rhapsody in blue (1924)
This is marked as the "short version" of the Rhapsody in Blue, played here by the Dombrova Piano Duo - Łukasz Szubski & Krzysztof Włodarczyk.
We were wondering what the SVIREL 10 on the round stand referred to.
The svirel is a Slavic folk instrument with 6 finger-holes, similar to the tin whistle, played in Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. Invented in the 1950s by Dimitriy Demenchuk, the 10 holed version is capable of fully chromatic playing along with mixed ensembles of other instruments. That presentation stand looks quite inviting. May we have one, please?
Darius Milhaud (1892-1974)
from the suite Scaramouche Op 165 (1937)
3 Brazileira, Mouvement de samba, in F major
Let's finish with this fiery performance by pianists Martha Argerich and Nelson Freire, playing in Tokyo, in October 2003:
