Yair Avidor
Yair Avidor plays renaissance and baroque lute, historic guitars, and the theorbo (chitarrone). He enjoys giving solo recitals, playing chamber music and accompanying singers.
Yair studied at the Hochschule fur Kunste, Bremen, with Stephen Stubbs; was a Fodella Scholarship holder at the Civica Scuola di Musica in Milan studying with Paul Beier; and completed his Masters at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London, studying with Bill Carter and David Miller.
He has performed in many prestigious concert venues including the Royal Festival Hall, the Konzerthaus, Vienna, and the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris.
He has a special interest in 17th century English, French and German lute music, and in the solo repertoire of the theorbo, which he aims to grow by writing new transcriptions for
the instrument.
In recent years he has also been exploring playing gut-strung historic guitars of the early and late 19th century (Lacote and Torres schools).
Yair plays an 11-course lute after Frei by Paul Thomson, 1987.

Evangelina Mascardi was born in Argentina in 1977. In 1997 she moved to Europe to study with Hopkinson Smith at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis (Basel, Switzerland), where she obtained her “Solisten Diplom” in 2001. She has played in all the best places and with all the best orchestras and conductors, but these days confines her work mostly to Alfredo Bernardini's Ensemble Zefiro and Sir John Eliot Gardiner's Monteverdi Choir. Evangelina Mascardi is our soloist in this recording of Bach's Lute Suite in G minor, which he set for lute, based on his Cello Suite No 5 BWV 1011.

Our use of the term "Suite" could equally be rendered as "Sonata" (not the later sonata form) or "Partita". Any of these terms are used for recordings and for concert programmes. Online, nobody seems to have offered one single recording of the entire Suite, so let's see if we can piece together some of Nigel North's recordings. The risk is that the tuning will be different each time!

The soloist in our final work is the Persian born Afshin Torabi, professor of guitar and musicology in Canada. He plays lute works on custom-built 11- and 13-string guitars by Heikki Rousu.
If you prefer to hear the piece on a true lute, then we also have Yair's recording of this work.
