This recording comes from a rather problematic performance space, the Konzerthaus Freiburg. Its design and construction were fairly controversial, with changes made and budgetary restraints imposed before any ground was struck or concrete poured.
The South West German Radio Symphony Orchestra moved in and found the acoustics virtually uncontrollable, with great difficulty hearing each other, as the sound drifted way up into the high space above their heads! The Berlin Philharmonia were not at all cautious in their remarks when booked to play in Freiburg-in-Breisgau!
Perhaps it works better for smaller ensembles. See what you think as we listen to five members of the SWR Symphonieorchester - Dirk Altmann, clarinet, Gil Shaham & Michael Dinnebier, violins, Gunter Teuffel, viola, and Marin Smesnoi, cello. They play the full 40 minute work, with the first movement occupying the first 14 minutes.
