Anson Wong
Pianist Anson Wong has been establishing himself as one of the most exciting young pianists from Hong Kong. His playing has been praised for its intelligence, power, ‘poetry and passion, and completely devoid of histrionics’(Yeung, Interlude).
As a solo pianist, Anson has appeared across Asia and Europe. He has appeared in all the major venues in Hong Kong including the Hong Kong City Hall, Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Concert Hall and Amphitheatre of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. He has also given successful recitals and performances in London, Tokyo, Kanazawa (Japan), Seoul, Vienna, and Salzburg. His performances and interviews have been featured on Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) and tvN across Asia. Recent highlights include his thoughts on Beethoven's Piano Sonatas and Concertos, his participation in the RTHK Beethoven 32 Project and the HKAPA (The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts) Rachmaninov Festival, and Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy, which were broadcast live on RTHK31.
Anson has appeared as concerto soloist with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, the Hong Kong Ponte Orchestra, the Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra, and the Academy Symphony Orchestra of the HKAPA. A frequent solo recitalist and chamber musician, Anson has performed with artists such as Nikki and Timothy Chooi (violins), Ju-Young Baek (violin), Anders Hui (violin), Yingna Zhao (violin), and Benjamin Moermond (bassoon).
His success in piano competitions includes Chopin International in Asia, Ishikawa International, the HKGNA International Music Competition. He is the recipient of the RAM Beethoven Piano Concerto Prize and the HKAPA Piano Concerto Prize. He has performed in various festivals including the Shenzhen Piano Music Festival, the
Salzburg Mozarteum International Summer Academy, and the International Summer Academy by MDW in Reichenau an der Rax.
He has been coached by Boris Berman, Robert Levin, Pascal Rogé, Angela Cheng,
Graham Scott, Arnulf von Arnim, Vanessa Latarche, Ronan O’hora, Dina Parakhina, and Andreas Frölich.
Apart from piano, he is also an accomplished composer. His pieces, ‘The 5 Elements’ and ‘D’Urban’, have won prizes at the Hong Kong School Music Festival and the TI:ME Electronic Music Composition Contest in the USA. His composition abilities were also showcased in his success in the Yamaha Asia Pacific Electone Festivals (Taiwan, Malaysia, and Macau) in which he composed and performed compositions by himself. He was awarded the Grand Prix, championing in improvisation, performance, and composition.
Born in Hong Kong, Anson had studied piano, bassoon, and composition at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) since nine. He received his bachelor’s degree with First-class Honours from the HKAPA under the tutelage of Prof Gabriel Kwok, with full support from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Scholarships.
He is now pursuing his Master’s degree at the Royal Academy of Music with Prof Christopher Elton, with full support from The Muriel, Lady Kadoorie Music Scholarship and the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund. He is also a scholar of the Sir Elton John Global Exchange Programme of the Royal Academy of Music.
