Duo Fabulae
Our name is Duo Fabulae and we are a viola and piano ensemble based in London. We started out as a result of the pandemic, with the aim of launching an online music series at the Sands Films Studio in London. From the very start, our concerts have focused on exploring the narrative side of classical music and creating programmes that speak to us about songs and stories from the past, present and future.
As individual professional musicians, we are prize-winners and perform with prestigious ensembles in the UK and internationally, including the Jubilee String Quartet, United Strings of Europe, and the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra. As a duo, we have won first prizes in competitions from Poland, Switzerland and USA and made appearances on Spain’s and Germany’s National Radios.
When we get together, we work to create intimate and immersive experiences for our audiences, leading us to collaborate with other artists and performing in unconventional settings such as London's City Lit through the Bloomsbury Festival or the Dijkstra Gallery in Antwerp. In 2023, we were awarded a bursary from the Guildhall School of Music Futures to fund an interdisciplinary project with filmmaker Radu Rojas centred on English composer Frank Bridge and his relationship with the Great War.

Recordings of the works in today's concert
Frank Bridge (1879-1941)
from Two Pieces for Viola and Piano H53 (1905)
1 Pensiero (F minor) [4:00]
2 Allegro appassionata in B minor H82 (1907-1908) [3:00]
Most violists seem to play the combination we shall hear at our concert - the first of the two pieces in the earlier H53, followed by the H82 Appassionata. The example here is violist Serena Hsu with pianist David Ji, performing in the Sprague Memorial Hall of Yale School of Music in the University of the same name.
If you too are puzzled by the piece that seems to be so frequently forgotten, here we have a recording of the missing Allegretto from H53's Two Pieces for Viola and Piano. The duo are Louise Williams, viola, and David Owen Norris, piano. It is actually a rather lovely work, more pensive than the appassionata!

Andras Schiff is the pianist here in a stunning platform performance with cellist Miklós Perényi, recorded in the Great Hall of the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest:
Johannes Brahms (1833-1897)
from Two Clarinet Sonatas Op 120 (1894)
arranged for viola (1895) [23:00]
1 Sonata in F minor
I Allegro appassionato
II Andante un poco adagio (Ab major)
III Allegretto grazioso (Ab major)
IV Vivace (F major)
These two young players seem very well matched. They are Adrien Boissseau, viola, and Gaspard Dehaene, piano, performing in the Flâneries Musicales de Reims (Reims Musical Strolls). There are over 20 venues for this festival and unfortunately the recording does not show which this comes from.
