Lin Xu-Zhang
London-based Australian pianist Lin Xu-Zhang is sought after as both a soloist and a collaborative artist. Lauded for his remarkable tonal palette and profound expressive depth, he has cultivated a bold and highly individual artistic identity shaped by his exploration of historically informed practices on the modern piano.
As such, the distinctive artistic breadth he brings with his adventurous and inquisitive readings to a vast repertoire spanning from the Renaissance to the present day – including more than a dozen concerti – have garnered him widespread acclaim from critics, colleagues and audiences worldwide.
Recent highlights include performances of Arnold Schoenberg’s rarely heard piano concerto as well as his participation in the Royal Academy of Music’s Summer Piano Festival, where he performed selections from György Kurtág’s complete Játékok as part of the Kurtág Project. A devoted advocate for contemporary music, he has also premiered works by several esteemed classical composers such as Gerard Brophy, Alex Pozniak, Ian Munns and Katia Beaugeais. The upcoming season will see him present more than two dozen solo recitals across Europe and Australia.
Lin has recorded as a soloist for the Cranbrook Recording Studio label and is a final-year undergraduate student with Joanna MacGregor CBE at the Royal Academy of Music, London, on a scholarship, receiving additional tutelage from Steven Osborne OBE and Andrew West. A distinguished laureate of several international competitions, Lin is the recipient of the Academy’s Mozart Piano Concerto Prize and the University of Sydney’s Sydney Scholars’ Award. His formative training was shaped by the tutelage of Laurent Boullet, Clemens Leske Jr, and Lina Petkova,

François Couperin (1668-1733)
from L'Art de Toucher le Clavecin, Premier Livre (1713)
La Logivière (allemande) [3:15]
from Troisième Livre (1722)
Le Rossignol-en-amour
Double du Rossignol [3:55]
Performing La Logivière we hear Anna Kistitsyna, on the William Dow harpsichord in Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church. Not that one! The Bryn Mawr near Phliadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.
For the Nightingale in Love and its "Double" we hear Maria Giovanna Fiorentino, recorder, and Maria Luisa Baldassari, harpsichord playing live in Montebelluna, 30 miles from Venice. The town is known for its boot and sports shoe museum (apparently)!

Erik Alfred Lesley Satie (1866-1925)
Embryons désechés Dessicated embryos (1913) [6:40]
D'holothurie (sea cucumber, without eyes)
D'edriophthalma (crustaceans with immovable eyes)
De podophthalma (crustaceans with eyes on stalks)
Maybe the straight music without words is a little dry (désechée, sorry about the pun). See what you think of Jean-Yves Thibaudet's performance. Just don't take the work too seriously. Satie didn't and he would have been 159 this year.
OR...
You might well enjoy Dr Scott Holden's TED talk on these short pieces (he does also perform them, with the words we must never say shown on the screen.) It's 12 minutes long and well worth it.

from Troisième Livre
Sœur Monique [3:35]
Le Turbulent Très vite [1:35]
This rendition of Sœur Monique comes from Malaga, and the Sala María Cristina, in what was originally a convent of the 15th century. The player is pianist Juan Ignacio Fernándes.
Christophe Rousset's performance of Le Turbulent matches the composer's marking of Trés vite - Very fast.

Avant-dernières pensées Penultimate Thoughts (1915) [3:45]
1 Idylle - for Claude Debussy (his friend)
2 Aubade - for Paul Dukas (friend to both)
3 Méditation - for Albert Roussel (his counterpoint tutor)
First, please have a listen to 10 year old Toru playing No 1, Idylle, in Dusseldorf's Goethe Museum.
To play the full set of three pieces we turn to Jean-Yves Thibaudet, this time on the piano, and with the score you can see how Satie wrote words onto the page, but these words must not be read out loud!

Disappointingly, we are not told who is the pianist on this complete recording.
We also spotted Margaret Fingerhut's performance on disc, but youtube have broken it into every short piece instead of leaving the complete work intact. We thought you'd like to hear Ms Fingerhut play a goodly section of the work so we have chosen the 4-minute Finale.
You will be looking at a rather younger Margaret on the record sleeve as the recording comes from 1989. Peter S tells us he was 35 in that year and that Ms Fingerhut is definitely younger than him.
What strange things he must discuss with our visiting musicians!
