Buck Brass Trio
Buck Brass is one of the UK’s leading brass chamber ensembles, renowned for its innovative programming, virtuosic performances, and commitment to expanding the brass repertoire. Founded in 2013 by graduates of the Royal Academy of Music, the ensemble has established itself as a leading force in brass chamber music.
Dedicated to broadening the scope of brass trio and quartet music, Buck Brass has championed both original compositions and transcriptions of works by composers such as Poulenc, Bohme, Ibert, and Beethoven. The ensemble has actively contributed to the expansion of brass repertoire by commissioning new works from renowned composers Steven Verhelst, Wendy Hiscocks, and Timothy Bowers. Their collaborations with both emerging and established composers have resulted in a diverse and growing body of works for the Brass Trio.
With a busy performance and recording schedule, Buck Brass has performed at some of the UK’s most prestigious venues, including HM Treasury, London Guildhall, St. James’s Piccadilly, Lambeth Palace, The King’s Chapel of the Savoy, The Queen’s Chapel at St James’s Palace, Westminster Abbey, and St. George’s Hanover Square.
Individually, members of Buck Brass regularly perform with world-class orchestras such as the Philharmonia Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, English National Opera Orchestra, London Sinfonietta, and BBC Concert Orchestra. They have played under the baton of internationally acclaimed conductors, including Semyon Bychkov, Marin Alsop, and Sir Mark Elder.

Chris North (b1956)
Little Suite for Trumpet, Horn and Trombone
Chris North is an accomplished cornet, trumpet and flugel player. While searching for a recording of his work this short piece appeared, with North as soloist. Chris runs Danetree Publishing which publishes original works and arrangements for various combinations of brass instruments, from duos all the way up to full brass bands. He is a fairly proilfic composer and arranger.
That little diversion was to cover the fact that YouTube did not come up with any of his original work. Instead, here is The Beatles' Yesterday, an arrangement by Chris North, with the Hebden Bridge Brass Band playing on Wetherby Bandstand.
Malcolm Bennett (1955-2025)
Three Miniatures for Brass Trio
Here again we have not been able to match the specific work. However, we do have a recording of the work for which Malcolm Bennett is best known. This is Rutland Water, performed by James Watson, trumpet, with pianists Philip Knowles and Jill Crossland. Malcolm Bennett died in March of this year.
Marc-Antoine Charpentier (1643-1704)
arr Dave Land
Te Deum Prelude
Not on today's programme, but a short piece of brass playing that certainly gives hope for the future of these instruments. The performers are pupils and staff of Norwich School, even the organist is staff. The solo trumpet and the right timpani are 6th-formers.
Dave Land, the arranger and conductor, takes the work at a graceful pace. As a "pop classic" it is often played faster, but as the Prelude for a grand work, maybe he has got it right here. Land needs to smile at his players more. Unfortunately, the only person who looks like he is enjoying this is the staff member on the left timpani!
The music broadcaster Gordon Reynolds was Professor of Harmony at the Royal School of Military Music, Kneller Hall, and also Director of Music at the Chapel Royal, Hampton Court Palace. The colonel in charge of Kneller Hall once remarked to Gordon that if he looked at his musicians the way Gordon looked at his choir, he would never get a note out of them.
