Basil Alter
In the 2024-2025 season, violinist Basil Alter enjoys several solo performances across the US and Europe, including London, New York, and Istanbul.
In London, upcoming engagements include appearances as soloist with the South London Sinfonia, Croydon Symphony, Guildford Symphony, and the Ernest Read Symphony Orchestra, and on concert series including Music on Thursdays Leatherhead with Dafydd Chapman, Katherine Concerts with Zany Denyer, and Belsize Park with Julian Chan.
He will lead the Royal Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra with Ed Gardner at the 2025 Aldeburgh Festival in June, and at the RAM he is working on projects including long-distance performance of the Ravel Duo for violin and cello, as well as uncovering earlier editions of Stravinsky’s violin and piano transcriptions.
Upcoming recording projects include Three Verses for Solo Violin, a piece written for and dedicated to him by Singaporean composer Elliot Teo.
He is a frequent collaborator with pianists including Evan Solomon, Riko Higuma, Zany Denyer, and Tiffany Qiu, and performs with the Dover Trio, a piano trio with pianist Shutian Cheng and cellist Adam Cubitt.
Before studying in London, Basil was based in New York studying at Manhattan School of Music with Mark Steinberg, where he led the orchestra on several occasions and worked alongside conductors including Rob Kapilow, Kent Tritle, and Leonard Slatkin.

Dafydd Chapman
Dafydd Chapman is in his first year of Masters study at the Royal Academy of Music studying Ensemble Piano under Mei-Ting Sun and James Baillieu.
Originally from Cardiff, he spent most of his childhood studying at the Junior Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, where he studied with Nicola Meecham for 9 years. During his time there, he became the first recipient of the Junior Conservatoire ABRSM Scholarship, won several prizes such as the Junior Conservatoire Prize for Solo Piano and won the Junior Conservatoire Chamber Prize. Most notably, he won the 2015 Junior Conservatoire Concerto Competition, in which he was given the opportunity to perform Chopin's Concerto No 1 with an orchestra at the conservatoire. Dafydd has also competed in several competitions including becoming a semi-finalist at the Gregynog Young Musician Competition and winning the national Urdd Eisteddfod three times. In 2012 and 2017, he also won the Piano Solo and the Repertoire classes at the Mid-Somerset Competitive Festival and also went on to win the Piano Concerto competition there in 2019. During his time at the RAM, Dafydd has gone on to perform a wide range of chamber and ensemble repertoire and taken part in internal competitions, notably, the Harold Craxton prize and performing with Trio Arisonto. |

Here we have an historic recording of surprising quality. Fritz Kreisler and Sergei Rachmaninoff are together in a recording made in 1928, and almost certainly cleaned up more recently. It is beautiful:
