- about Crotchets & Quavers
Crotchets & Quavers is an ensemble consisting of second year students at the University of Chichester. We sing a variety of genres, focusing our efforts on Classical and Musical Theatre pieces. Today's performance will showcase what we, as an ensemble, and individuals, have to offer. We hope you enjoy the concert!
Daisy Shephard is studying for a BA Music. She sings first soprano in Crotchets and Quavers and as a part of the university's Symphonic Choir. She has recently started learning to play the flute to expand her musical knowledge and aid her sight-reading. After achieving her degree she hopes to go on to teach music and singing to young people.
Evie Hamilton-Mason is studying Music with Teaching. She is a classically trained soprano, singing second soprano in Crotchets and Quavers. Aside from the ensemble, she is currently involved with various other choirs such as the university's Chamber Choir and Symphonic Choir. She also is a new member of the university's Pops Orchestra, playing the flute. In her spare time, she enjoys extending her skills in piano and guitar. Evie aims to become a singing teacher once she leaves university with her degree.
Emily Waters is studying Music with Teaching. She sings alto in Crotchets and Quavers. At the university she is involved in many ensembles where she gets the opportunity to sing and play flute, piano and harpsichord. Emily is also a part of the Musical Theatre Society in which she has been Musical Director for a showcase and most recently The Music Man. She plans to return to her home in New York State after university and obtain a Masters degree in education.
Harry Heaven is studying Vocal Performance. Singing tenor in Crochets and Quavers, the university's Otter Consort, Chamber Choir, and Symphonic choir he is thoroughly enjoying his experience at Chichester. He aims to go on and complete a Master's in Music Therapy while teaching singing, piano, and the flute to budding young musicians.
Ciaran O'Donovan is studying Music and Musical Theatre. In addition to singing bass in the ensemble, he is a member of the University's Chamber and Symphonic Choirs, as well as of the Otter Consort. He is also a Choral Scholar at Arundel Cathedral. Ciaran is also pursuing his theatrical ambitions, having performed the role of the Guard in a performance of Howard Moody's Opera PUSH. In addition to this, Ciaran was thrilled to perform in a new adaptation of Dracula, by acclaimed director Gary Sefton. After completing his studies, Ciaran hopes to complete a Masters in Musical Theatre.

Our first ever vocal ensemble concert opens with the traditional French tune Berger, secoue ton sommeil profond, (Shepherds shake off your drowsy sleep). The advent hymn People, Look East is the text in these recordings. On the left is an arrangement by Ely Cathedral's Paul Trepte. The less professional recording on the right gives you some idea of Malcolm Archer's arrangement, with the interlude between the verses:

Next we hear Mozart's Ave Verum Corpus, sung here by Harry Christophers' The Sixteen. You will see the text and the English translation:
Va pensiero is the Italian title of The Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves. Here is a recording with far greater forces than we shall hear - the Chorus and Orchestra of the Accademia Nacionale di Santa Cecilia:
Even larger forces are occasionally available to a conductor, as Dominic Peckham shows when he brings together members of the BBC Symphony Chorus, singers from a workshop event, and first-timers, with the brass section of the BBC Concert Orchestra:
Time to listen to a smaller ensemble. The King's Singers bring us Frank Bridge's setting of Tennyson's poem The Bee:
Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical The Phantom of the Opera includes this beautiful number.
All I ask of you is sung here by Josh Groban and Kelly Clarkson:
Another chance to follow the score here as the choir of Clare College Cambridge sing Sir John Stainer's God so loved the World, from The Crucifixion:
Soprano Fiona Campbell sings Dido's Lament, Purcell's haunting aria on a ground bass, from the opera Dido & Aeneas. The ensemble here is the Australian Chamber Orchestra and they are performing at Angel Place, Sydney:
The Lament runs straight into the final chorus "with drooping wings". In this performance from the annual festival La Folle Journée in Nantes was given in 2006 by the Ricercar Consort and Collegium Regale Gent, under the direction of Philippe Pierlot:
Vexilla Regis prodeunt - The Royal banners issue forth - is used in Catholic services, but we shall hear Puccini's arrangement of the original plainchant, sung here by baritone Justino Diaz and tenor Placido Domingo:
We finish with The Prayer by Carole Bager Sayer and David Foster, in an arrangement by Tom Fettke that takes in SS Wesley's Lead me, Lord (changed to Lead US, Lord). The choir is called Singers by the Sea and they are singing in an annual concert held each May at Palms Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville Beach, Forida:
We hope you have enjoyed your Concert at Home.
