Bartosz Glowacki
Bartosz Glowacki, born July 1992, is one of the leading lights of a new generation of accordionists. His artistic goal is to improve awareness of the accordion in classical music, as well as to develop a new repertoire for his instrument.
He was born in Poland where he studied classical accordion with Professor Andrzej Smolik at the National Music School in Sanok. He is currently studying at the Royal Academy of Music in London with Professor Owen Murray.
Bartosz won the Polish Young Musician of the Year in 2009, following which he represented Poland in the Eurovision Young Musicians Competition in Vienna. Here he performed Mikolaj Majkusiak's "Concerto Classicco" for accordion and symphony orchestra in the grand finale with the ORF Vienna Symphony Orchetra. He is a recipient of 33 prizes in national, as well as international music competitions.
As a soloist he has performed in many prestigious concert halls, including the Wigmore Hall, Royal Festival Hall, Purcell Room, Colston Hall, Studio S1 of The Polish National Radio Station, and many others. He has premiered compositions by Luke Bedford, Richard Causton, Christopher Austin, Maciej Zimka, and Johannes Schöllhorn, as well as working with famous conductors like Trevor Pinnock, Lukasz Borowicz, Roland Klutting, Cornelius Meister, Anna Mroz, Jonathan Mann, Michael Collins and Wojciech Mrozek.
Bartosz has worked with institutions such as the Royal Opera House, the Chroma Ensemble, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, City of London Sinfonia, Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, Sinfonia Varsovia and many others. In these contexts he has performed multiple new operas and orchestral works, which feature the accordion in several different styles. His plan for the year ahead is to release his solo CD featuring contemporary music for accordion.

Iosif Purits
Iosif Purits was born in Moscow in 1988. His father, also Iosif Purits, was the well-known bayanist and teacher. When Iosif was six years old his father started to teach him to play the bayan. However it didn’t last long. After a sudden illness his father died and 8 year old Iosif remained with his mother – Natalia Purits. She gave him primary music education. The same year Iosif played in a duet four-voice Contrapunct from the Bach's «Art of fugue». At that age he became a prizewinner at the International competition «Classica Nova» in Germany.
Since then the young musician started an intensive music life. Annual victories at International competitions, concerts, festivals. Iosif was the first child in Russia to win the International competition in Klingenthal under-12s category. Seven times he played at the International festival «the Bayan and Bayanists» in Moscow. As a child, he was a prizewinner of the sixth Artiada of the peoples of Russia.
Iosif is a prizewinner of 21 International competitions. One of his latest victories is First prize in the absolute category at the International competition of accordionists in Castelfidardo (Italy).
Iosif is participating in art projects of the International Charity Foundation of Vladimir Spivakov. In the past he was took part in the International Charity Foundation New Names.
With concert programs he toured many countries of the world, such as Kirghizia, Belarus, Austria, Sweden, Finland, Germany, Czech Republic, China, France and Canada. From 2004 to 2008 Iosif studied in the college of the A G Shnitke Moscow State Institute of Music under professor Andrey Ledenyov. Next he was a student of the Russian Gnesin’s Academy of Music where he is studied under professor Friedrich Lips.
Iosif is currently studying on the post-graduate diploma course at London's Royal Academy of Music.

Peter Horsfield was inspired by this concert to put pen to paper once more! Here is his partly acrostic poem, "Accordion".
Accordion (Part-Acrostic)
Artist's challenge: writhing snake-like moves Constantly change its shape with every breath, Contain within pulsating, curving box Of many buttons' input, a music Repertoire so different from the squeeze-box Dance-band stereotyped image; rises Incandescent with depth of emotion. Oh what volume, together with delivery; Nuances of facial angles never still. His chin at times rests on the instrument, as if to coax last drop of resonance, may tilt aloft, or hide behind the box with furrowed brow; fleeting duration gone in rapid turns, and synchronicity of nimble fingers mirrors a spooky sonority that lingers quite spell-bound amidst the aura. Ever-fluid sound, now shared in lively duet, reaches page encapsulated by dynamic pen. |

We are probably going to get in hot water by choosing performances on both the accordion and the piano accordion, but for some of the items in today's concert there was little online choice.
Our performers will be playing on bayans, or Russian accordions.
You can read more about types of accordion here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accordion
You might be surprised to find the 18th-century Scarlatti opening our accordion concert.
It should not take many bars to convince you that this is a good expressive interpretation of the work:

De Profundis, Out of the Deep, requires interesting playing techniques to achieve its effects.

Michał Kubarski is our next performer, with Vaclav Trojan's The Ruined Cathedral:
Bent Lorentzen's Tears , played here on the accordion by Karol Grzeszczuk:
Next we have a piano performance of Mussorgsky's Children's Games:
We are more accustomed to Astor Piazzolla in tango mode, but

You will almost certainly recognise the theme of Rákóczy March. This was the national anthem of Hungary for a century, until the present Himnusz was adopted in 1844. The March is still played for state and military occasions. In this recording prize-winner Vitaly Kondratenko is playing at the 2013 International Accordion Competition in Vilnius, Lithuania:
The first programme the players sent us included Mendelssohn's Spinnerlied.
It would have been the shortest and probably the most well-known piece in the concert.
Here is another young Polish player - Piotr Krzaczkowski - with Spinning Song:

Piazzolla's Libertango is played on various instruments at our concerts. For our 2014 season finale we are going to hear it on two accordions. Online we have found two versions for you. The street version by Evgenie Ahmadov could be said to be more "after Libertango" than a strictly accurate performance of the work.
However, you may want to turn up the sound so as not to miss the opening bars of
the duo version here from Michal Gajda and Konrad Mikołajczy:

There is such a choice of versions, even if we restrict ourselves to accordions, but this solo performance by Richard Galliano (who composed New York Tango) has to be one of the best:
