Paisaje Folklorico Nr 2 Folkloric Landscape No 2 (2015-2017) 7:40
This rarely happens ! Our recording of Paisaje Folkorico No 2 is performed by none other than the composer himself, with his pianist Anaïs Crestin:
Piano Solo
Claude Debussy (1862-1918)

II Hommage à Rameau Homage to Rameau 6:50
The pianist here is Marc-André Hamelin:
Bass Clarinet Solo
Ruth Dorothy Louisa 'Wid' Gipps (1921-1999)
Prelude for Bass Clarinet Solo op 51 (1958) 5:00
Ruth Gipps was a member of the City of Birmingham Orchestra, later to add the word 'Symphony' to its name. The player for this solo is today's CBSO Principal Bass Clarinet, Mark O'Brien:
More about Ruth Gipps:
Ruth ‘Wid’ Gipps joined the CBO (City of Birmingham Orchestra, as it was known then) as second oboe in the summer of 1944 – an early appointment to the new full-time orchestra.
Also an accomplished concert pianist, Gipps was already finding her voice as a composer and conductor and the orchestra’s principal conductor at the time, George Weldon, offered her numerous opportunities to showcase her many musical talents.
On 25 March 1945 she played in the orchestra in Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnol, appeared as soloist in Glazunov’s First Piano Concerto, and finally played cor anglais in the premiere of her own First Symphony.
‘How often does musical history show a case of so remarkable a symphony written by a girl of twenty-one – or for that matter, by a boy?’ asked the Birmingham Post.
After she left the orchestra in the spring of that year, Weldon continued to champion Gipps’ music and she went on to direct the City of Birmingham Choir, found the London Repertoire Orchestra and compose a further four symphonies.
In 1949, meanwhile, she launched and edited Play On – the CBSO’s first in-house magazine. Gipps was a truly remarkable lady with an incredible musical talent and continues to hold a special place within the CBSO family history.
Astor Pantaléon Piazzolla (1921-1992)
Oblivion (1982) 3:30
Libertango (1974) 5:00
OK, I may have panicked here.
There was no sign of a recording of Oblivion on bass clarinet.
Did I pick the next best thing? I leave you to decide as you listen to the mellow sound of the four double basses of the Emeth Ensemble 에메트앙상블.
The players are:
Mikyung Sung 성미경,
Seongsu Hong 홍성수
Jaesun Park 박재선 and
Manki Kim 김만기.
They are playing for the 877th House Concert, of Arts Council Korea's Artist House, Seoul:
Perhaps not an exact match, but at least the next arrangement includes a bass clarinet.
We have heard many versions, arrangements, and transpositions of Libertango in our concerts. I can assure you that this one is completely new to us.
The performers are Christoph Pepe Auer, bass clarinet, and Manu Delago, hang (or handpan). Their recording of the piece is included in their DVD Living Room. Listen out for the moment when the melody moves to the bass clarinet and the hang or handpan becomes the accompaniment.
If you'd like to try out a handpan you will find them online for between £200 and £1800 each.
Vittorio Monti (1868-1922)
Czárdás (1904) 5:30
The Colombian Dúo Bajo el Piano (does that really mean Duo under the Piano?) comprises Gonzalo Quintero, bass clarinet and Juan Coronado, piano.
