We are turning the tables this week, inviting pupils from Leatherhead Trinity to come to LMC and perform for our Music on Thursdays Lunchtime Concert.
Usually, our charity Leatherhead Concert & Arts Society takes musicians into the School to entertain the pupils and to demonstrate their instruments.
We regularly ask: which instrument will sound lower, this shorter one, or this longer one? It has been a delight to see the balance of pupil opinion moving towards the correct answer over the different visits.
Visits in the current School year have included flute, trumpet, French horn, trombone, harp, and piano. Previously we have taken in guitar, clarinet, bassoon, oboe, tuba, and on one occasion we had two players at one piano.
These visits are financed by occasional fund-raising at our concerts, and by the kind donations of our members as they renew their subscription.
In 2023 we also raised money directly to purchase 10 mini-flutes and five pTrumpets to promote the learning of these instruments. These are "entry" instruments from which musicians may transfer in later years, to other woodwind or reed instruments or other brass instruments.
At the recent harp and flute concert, thanks to a pupil's question, we learned that both players are professional on their third choice of instrument. Each had set aside two other instruments on the way to Royal Academy of Music success!

In April 2023 the all-female Solis Trio played their trumpet, horn and trombone for the pupils.
By opening with popular music, especially related to children's film and tv, the players also managed to slip in a couple of classical pieces. These children are open to listening to live music they have not heard before. |
This picture of Siruis Chau on flute and our dear friend Gwenllian Llyr on harp, comes from their visit in 2024. Once again the pupils listened intently to some quite challenging music. The level of attention here, and in the follow-up flute and piano "story" concert, were superb. Once again, linking with popular culture prepared young ears for some serious music ! |
