Mr Binns was apparently indisposed. Anthony Cairns, Organist of Christ Church, kindly played a recital in place of the advertised concert. ♫▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ The Hill, Norman & Beard Organ
The Christ Church organ was built by Hill Norman & Beard in 1970 with 16 stops, using some pipes from previous organs plus some neo-baroque sounds typical of the 1960's and '70's (Chimney Flute and Fifteenth on open-foot voicing, like the Royal Festival Hall organ). In 1995, HNB moved some loud stops from the Great to a new double case in the nave, 6 stops were added, and the tone was refined.

Vitali's Chaconne in G minor begins with a few soft notes from the organ, so you may want to turn up the volume at first. The players are violinist Tae-eun Kim with Hyoju Ahn at the organ in the KNUA Hall (Korean National University of Arts):
It is always pleasing to find a recording from somewhere closer to home.
For Dr Thomas Arne's Introduction and Fugue we have a recording on the recent Tickell organ
of St Barnabas Church, Dulwich. The organist is Matthew Morley.

Otto Olsson's Romance is played here by the Latvian violinist Janis Bulavs,
with Larisa Bulava at the Walker organ in Riga Dom Cathedral.

A sound-only recording first, of Rheinberger's Cantilena. The performer is that great Dutch organist and composer, Feike Asma and he is playing the organ in Amsterdam's famous Oude Kerk. Choosing the button on the right you will hear (and see) the young organist Gert van Hoef giving a lunchtime recital of the same work in Amsterdam's Westerkerk. The recital is a duty of his scholarship at the Conservatorium.
And finally, at the concert we will only have time to hear the Gigue from Rheinberger's Six Pieces Opus 150.
You may like to hear all six of these fine works for violin, cello, and organ. If you only have time for the Gigue you will find the durations listed beneath the video (by clincking on "Show More").

I had expected a "violin and organ" concert to be made up of several fine transcriptions and arrangements.
So it really is a pleasure to discover this, to me unknown, repertoire written especially for these instruments.
I hope you have enjoyed the journey too. Peter Steadman
