Buck Brass Quartet
Buck Brass is one of the leading young brass ensembles in the UK, and was formed in 2013 by graduates from the Royal Academy of Music.
The ensemble has pioneered a large amount of new repertoire for Brass Trio and Quartet, including transcriptions of works by Bach, Piazzolla, Ibert and Beethoven as well as collaborating with young and established composers.
The ensemble has a busy performance and recording schedule having performed in prestigious venues including Westminster Abbey, London Guildhall, St James's Piccadilly, Lambeth Palace, 1901 Arts Club, The King’s Chapel of the Savoy, St James's Palace, and St George’s Hanover Square.
Members of the ensemble have considerable experience performing with all of the major orchestras including the Philharmonia Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Opera House Orchestra, London Sinfonietta, and the BBC Concert Orchestra. They have worked alongside renowned conductors including Semyon Bychkov, Marin Alsop and Sir Mark Elder.

Recordings of the works in today's concert
Andrea Gabrieli (1533–1585)
from Libro primo de Madrigali a 3 voce (1575)
First book of Madrigals for 3 voices
A Caso un Giorno mi guidó la sorte By chance, fate guided me [2:00]
There are two renditions of this piece on YouTube. The first uses electronic sounds for trombones, the other is a choir who don't give much oomph!
For a flavour of Gabrieli's handling of brass instruments, here instead is Ricercar del Duodecimo Tuono - Ricercar of the Twelfth Tone. Ricercar? It's a mostly Italian form that explores fugues and counterpoint.
These unnamed brass players are performing in the Steigerwald Cathedral in Gerölzhofen, Southern Germany, at a special service marking the 400th anniversary of Julius Echter, Prince-Bishop of Würzburg:

The performers here are the Esterhazy Ensemble. There seem to be no performances on YouTube which show the players:
Oskar Böhme (1870-1938)
Prelude and Fugue in Eb Major Op 28 No 2 (1904) [4:15]
Andante con moto
Allegro moderato
The Birdwood Brass Trio perform on this recording, but Doug Wilson, trumpet, Bradley Tatum, horn, and James Martin, trombone remain unseen as we follow the musical score:
Horn Solo:
Bernhard Krol (1920-2013)
Laudatio (1966) [4:30]
The soloist offering his audience an encore here is the Czech conductor and horn player Radek Baborak. Which orchestra is sitting behind him is not indicated.
Florence Beatrice Price (1887-1953)
from The Organ Portfolio vol 15/86 (1951)
arr for brass quartet Dr Jasmine "Jazzie" Pigott (b1997)
Adoration [3:25]
There are several recordings of this piece for different instruments. The historic nature of this performance drew us to it. The Nova Orchester, under William Garfield Walker, are performing a work by Florence Price for the first time in Vienna, by any orchestra. The accompanying video switches bewtween the orchestra and scenes of Vienna and Austria, building on Price's theme of Adoration.
If you enjoy Florence Price's style, there will be a bonus piece at the end of these recordings.

Violin Concerto No 2 in D minor (1952) [15:00]
Here are A Kori Hill's notes for this beautiful concerto, as published on YouTube:
Florence Price (1887–1953) was a native of Little Rock, Arkansas, where she lived until 1927 when she and her family relocated to Chicago. Fleeing the racial terrorism of the Jim Crow South, Price found herself in a city whose segregation policies had led Black Chicagoans to establish economic, artistic, and scholarly institutions that facilitated creative and communal growth.
Already a member of the National Association of Negro Musicians (NANM), Price became an active (and famous!) participant in the Chicago chapter, which hosted recitals and conferences and served as an important networking space for Black musicians. Like her contemporary and colleague Harry T Burleigh, Price was interested in the creative potential of a classical music aesthetic built on antebellum-era Black folk and western classical music genres.
Rather than a conservative or conventional venture, Price’s stylistic decisions exemplified how Black Americans were envisioning the creative potential of past artistic material in contemporary expressions of Black American life.
Price’s Violin Concerto No. 2 contains four distinct sections; each section contains the same melodic material that reappears in different orchestrations, textures, and/or accompanied with new motivic material. Price’s structural and textual decisions indicate a close study of spirituals and juba dance, from her use of varied repetition, heterophonic textures, rhythmic material, and harmonic language.
In less than 20 minutes, Price showed how adhering to standard composing rules, be it for concertos or spirituals, provided innovative ways to engage with these art forms, crafting new ways of hearing the past and understanding its artistic purpose in the present.
Violinist Kelly Hall-Tompkins brings her unparalleled virtuosity and commitment to social justice to this performance.
Kelly Hall-Tompkins performs with the Urban Playground Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Thomas Cunningham for the Harry T Burleigh Society.
Composer and opera singer Burleigh was a pupil and friend of Dvorak when the latter was Director of the National Conservatory of Music in New York.
