Anthony Cairns
Anthony Cairns,
MA, BMus, ARCM, has been organist and choirmaster at Christ Church
since 1965, and was consultant for organ rebuilds there in 1970 and 1995. He
briefly studied piano teaching, cello, and choir training at the Royal
College of Music and holds degrees in law (Cambridge, 1961) and music
(London, 1977).
Anthony taught class music in Surrey secondary schools, becoming Head of Music at Esher College in 1977. He taught academic music and keyboard harmony at the Purcell School 1987-97. He was conductor of Leatherhead Choral Society 1991-2000, and formed the Leatherhead chamber choir AntiphoniA in 2007.
As an organist Anthony is largely self-taught, and particularly admires Peter Hurford and Olivier Latry.

The Christ Church organ was built by Hill, Norman & Beard in 1970 with 16 stops, using some pipes from previous organs plus some neo-baroque sounds typical of the 1960's and '70's (Chimney Flute and Fifteenth on open-foot voicing, like the Royal Festival Hall organ). In 1995, HNB moved some loud stops from the Great to a new double case in the nave, 6 stops were added, and the tone was refined. |

Our concert at Christ Church opens with
Buxtehude's Praeludium in G minor, BuxWV 149, played here by
Ton Koopman, on the Arp Schnittger baroque organ in St Jacobi, Hamburg
Here is Ton Koopman once more, this time playing the Wilde-Schnittger organ in Lüdingworth, Germany,
an instrument dating from 1599. This short Buxtehude work is his Canzonetta BuxWV 173:

Nicolaus Bruhns' Little Praeludium in E-minor is played here by Jos Maters,
on the 49-stop Metzler organ in St Cyriakuskirche, Krefeld-Hüls, Germany:
Next, celebrated French organist André Isoir plays JS Bach's Prelude and Fugue in E-minor BWV 533:
Two works by the Tudor composer Thomas Tomkins. Firstly his Voluntary, played on a chamber organ, in
Holy Trinity Church, Stratford-upon-Avon. The Fantasy on the right is almost certainly not the one we will be hearing at the concert,
but it will give you an idea of a Tomkins Fantasy, here played on a synthesizer:

Robert Costin, currently Director of Music at Ardingly College, is the organist for this performance of Matthew Locke's brief Voluntary in A minor, on the organ of Pembroke College, Cambridge, where in 1990 he had been Organ Scholar:
Percy Whitlock's Salix is the fourth of five pieces in his Plymouth Suite. The organist here is Luca Rosso,at the organ in Messina Cathedral, Italy. If you would like to listen to the full suite, the video on the right is of Mikhail Mischenko, playing the organ of the Glazunov Concert Hall, in St Petersburg Conservatoire, with dancers Polina Artemyeva and Bogdan Korolyok:

Donald Hunt's Tomkins' Trifle has eluded us, regrettably. So let us move on to our final work today.
Matthias Rascher calls this a "nice little trupet tune" by Christopher Tambling - and it is where our concert closes:
