Danzas Fantasticas Op 22 (1919)
1 Exaltación, a jota from Aragon
Parecía como si las figuras de aquel cuadro incomparable
se movieran dentro del cáliz de uno flor.
It seemed as though the figures in that incomparable picture
were moving inside the calyx of a flower.
2 Ensueño, a Basque zortziko in 5/8 time
Las cuerdas de la guitarra, al sonar, eran como lamentos
de un alma que no pudiera más con el peso de la amargura.
The guitar's strings sounded the lament
of a soul helpless under the weight of bitterness.
3 Orgía, an Andalusian farruca
El perfume de las flores se confundía con el olor de la manzanilla,
y del fondo de las estrechas copas, llenas del vino incomparable, como un incienso, se elevaba la alegría.
The perfume of the flowers merged with the odour of manzanilla,
and from the bottom of raised glasses, full of the
incomparable wine, like an incense, rose joy.

David Massey began his studies with David Burden in Hertfordshire. In 2006 he was the strings finalist in the BBC Young Musician competition. He went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music with Michael Lewin.
David has performed at Wigmore Hall, Purcell Room, Sage Gateshead, King’s Place, St Martin in the Fields, and expanded into chamber music and orchestral playing, incorporating mandolin and banjo and including the UK premiere of Timothy Walker’s Guitar Concerto and recording with Chineke! orchestra. He has performed in a flute and guitar duo with Emily Andrews, the Andrews Massey Duo, since 2009 and they have released three CDs together. Forming the CarmenCo trio with Francisco Correa and Emily Andrews, David has toured the UK giving concerts and masterclasses. The trio won an Arts Council grant to support a tour of "Creating Carmen", a concert play performed by the trio with two actors, featuring their arrangements of Spanish inspired music, also available on CD. www.davidmasseymusic.com |
“Correa is equally comfortable gliding through brisk, virtuosic numbers and exquisite, heartfelt songs. Highly recommended!” Classical Guitar Magazine
Classical guitarist Francisco Correa was born in Colombia and moved to Europe to study in 2006. He graduated from his Masters degree at the Royal Academy of Music in London. A prize winner in many classical guitar competitions in Colombia, he has also been awarded the "Médaille d’Or", as well as the "Prix de Perfectionnement" in France where Francisco studied with Judicael Perroy. A regular solo recitalist, Francisco performs in concert series and festivals in UK, Europe and Latin America. Francisco has performed several concertos with orchestras in England, Colombia and France, but of particular note is the Latin American premiere of Steve Goss's Guitar Concerto in 2019 in Bogotá with the National Symphony Orchestra of Colombia. His debut CD, “Música de la Tierrita”, has attracted enthusiastic reviews in Classical Guitar Magazine, Guitare Classique and Soundboard Magazine - arguably the top three most important guitar publications worldwide. Recently Francisco gained the prestigious Ibermúsicas Award, giving him funding to commission, and record the “Suite Warmikuna” for guitar solo, a work inspired by Ecuadorian folk rhythms, paying homage to leading women in Ecuadorian history. www.franciscocorreaguitar.com |
Recordings of the works in today's concert
Henry Purcell (1659-1695)
arr Pedro Barreiro (Quito, 1981)
Ground in C minor ZT681 (3m00)
The first recording is the purest, enabling us to hear the individual notes of this work, at a brisk tempo. The pianist is Roman Lopatynskyi, performing in the National Philharmonic of Ukraine, in Kiev, in March this year.
The guitar recordings take this work at a much slower pace, so it will be interesting to hear how Francisco and David approach the piece in our concert. The guitarist in the recording here is Nataly Makovskaya.

Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco (1895-1968)
from Les Guitares bien tempérées Op 199 (1962)
Vol 1 No 3 Prelude and Fugue in A minor (5m22)
Here are the Brasil Duo - João Luiz and Douglas Lora:
Vol 1 No 4 Prelude and Fugue in E major (4m20)
Pedro Barreiro
from Suite Warmikuna (2020) (20m00)
Mama Tránsito (San Juanito) (4m30)
II Mama Dulú (Tonada)
III Mama Lorenza (Yaraví)
IV Mama Blanca (Albazo en Granada)
For his solo item Francisco has chosen to bring us the first movement of this suite by Ecuadorian composer Pedro Barreiro. Warmikuna means women in the Quechua language and the suite is about indigenous feminine figures of the country.
As far as we can see, Francisco is the first to record these pieces, so although Mama Transito is the first 4m30 of this recording, you will be able to listen to the entire suite it you wish.
Peter Maxwell Davies (1934-2016)
arr Timothy Walker (b1943)
from The Yellow Cake Review (1980)
3 Farewell to Stromness (3m35)
David's solo piece is also from a suite, the harshly satirical The Yellow Cake Revue. This was a reaction to the proposal to open a uranium mice just two miles from the town of Stromness.
The pianist is Peter Fagerlind, and the pictures come from www.orkney.com
Joaquin Turina Pérez (1882-1949)
arr Greg Nestor
Danzas Fantasticas Op 22 (1919)
1 Exaltación, a jota from Aragon
2 Ensueño, a Basque zortziko in 5/8 time
3 Orgía, an Andalusian farruca
Not a duo, but a guitar quartet, are the performers on this recording of the Danza Fantasticas. Paris-based Quatuor Éclisses perform at the Gliwice Guitar Festival 2017, in Poland. They are Gabriel Bianco, Arkaïtz Chambonnet, Pierre Lelièvre & Benjamin Valette:
