Abingdon Quintet
The Abingdon Quintet was formed in October 2014 shortly after the members of the group began their undergraduate studies at the Royal Academy of Music.
Having known each other at Chetham’s School of music, Epsie, Imogen, Maude and Sam decided to find a bassoonist and form a wind quintet. The Abingdon Quintet gets its name from the Abingdon House School, where the group are lucky enough to be able to rehearse on a regular basis, often performing to the pupils.
As students at the Academy, the group has access to world class tutors. They receive regular coaching from Keith Bragg, as well as having been coached by Sam Coles, Angie Malsbury, John Orford, Chris O’Neal, Mike Thompson, Melanie Ragge and Mark Van De Wiel. The Abingdon Quintet also participate regularly in Chamber Music Forums with the Academy’s Chamber Music Fellows.
Most recently, the Abingdon Quintet were commended in the Harold Craxton Prize for ensemble and piano. In November, they performed at the Wigmore Hall as part of their ‘For Crying Out Loud’ concert series for parents and babies. They have previously performed recitals at the Wye Valley Festival, Faversham Assembly Rooms, The London Sketch Club, Royal Academy of Music and in many churches throughout London. Last summer, they had a week-long residency involving three concerts in the Dordogne, hosted by singer David Wilson Johnson.

Epsie Thompson is a flautist from South Wales, currently a student at the Royal Academy of Music where she is studying with Sam Coles. She began learning the flute aged 7 at her local primary school and at 14 began her studies at Chetham’s School of Music with Linda Verrier.
From 2010-14, Epsie was a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and Principal Flute in 2013/14. With the orchestra she had the opportunity to play great works with inspirational conductors at venues such as at the Royal Albert Hall at the BBC Proms. After NYO, she joined the National Youth Orchestra of Wales where she is currently Principal flute. She recently played with the orchestra as part of a side-by-side project with BBC NOW with a finishing concert at St David’s Hall.
She is a keen performer and in 2014, won the Dyfed Young Musician of the Year competition and the Young Woodwind Player of the Year at the Gregynog competition. In 2015, she competed in the National Eisteddfod of Wales and came 2nd in the woodwind competition and qualified to compete in the prestigious Blue Ribbon competition. In 2016, she was a finalist in the International Young Musician competition at the Llangollen Eisteddfod.
Epsie has given recitals across Wales including at St David’s Cathedral, Fishguard Festival, and Tenby Arts Festival where she premiered a new piece commissioned for her. In June 2015, she recorded 2 unaccompanied flute pieces by Mike Parkin for Prima Facie Records.
Aside from music, Epsie has a keen interest in fashion and designs and makes her own clothes.

Imogen Davies is currently studying with Christopher Cowie and Ian Hardwick at the Royal Academy of Music, where she has been awarded the Leverhulme Trust Undergraduate Scholarship and the Mrs Doris Ethel Blake Prize. She studies cor anglais with Sue Bohling.

At Chetham’s, Imogen studied oboe with Rachael Clegg, and also worked regularly with Val Taylor and Stephane Rancourt. Yorkshire born clarinettist Sam Gillespie is in his final year of study at the Royal Academy of Music where he is a scholar studying with Christopher Richards (LSO) and Angela Malsbury.

Recently he has had the opportunity to perform as part of the London Symphony Orchestra, with the Nash Ensemble, alongside Tamsin Little in Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time and playing as a soloist for royalty at the 50th anniversary concert of the Harrogate International Festival alongside Emma Johnson and Lesley Garret.

Elliott Howley is currently a third year student at the academy, having started playing at the age of twelve. Elliott is being taught by Richard Watkins having previously being taught by Michael Thompson and Stuart Bower.
During Elliott's time as a horn player he has played with a variety of youth orchestras and ensembles, one of the highlights having played Mahler's Ninth Symphony in the BBC Proms, under the baton of Sir Mark Elder as part of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain.
More recently Elliott has been involved with projects with the Britten-Pears Orchestra - working with Semyon Bychkov, at the Snape proms - and the Orion Orchestra.
Elliott is also interested in chamber music being a member of several different groups and performing with them regularly, one of particular interest being this horn quartet, formed at the Academy.

Sarah Hoyle is in her fourth year at the Royal Academy of Music studying the bassoon as an ABRSM scholar. She is currently studying with John Orford, Robin O’neill and Fraser Gordon (Contra Bassoon).
Before going to the Academy, she attended the Junior Royal Northern College of Music, learning with Steve Magee. During her time at the Academy, Sarah has had the opportunity to work with prestigious conductors such as Sir Mark Elder, Trevor Pinnock and Semyon Bychkov, as well as taking part in masterclasses and performance classes with Dan Jemison, Ole Kristian Dahl, Gabor Takács-Nagy and Marco Lugaresi.
Sarah has also been very involved in chamber music, and with her quintet she has had the opportunity to tour the south of France and perform in the Wigmore hall. Whilst at the academy, Sarah took part in the Pendle Young Musicians Bursary Scheme, and through this bursary project was given the opportunity to perform, as a soloist, with the Manchester Camerata in their “Classics with a twist concert series”.
