Francis Jean Marcel Poulenc (1899-1963)
Sonata for Horn, Trumpet and Trombone
i Allegro moderato ii Andante iii Rondeau
Poulenc's trio sonata is performed here by Přemysl Vojta, solo horn, Martin Griebl, solo trumpet, and Jeffrey Kant, solo trombone, as part of the chamber music series WDR Funkhausmusik.
The concert took place in Spring 2020 at the Wallrafplatz Funkhaus in Cologne.
The players are leading members of the Westdeutscher Rundfunk or WDR Orchestra.
WDR is one of Germany's regional public broadcast organisations.
Josef Anton Bruckner (1824–1896)
Two Aequali
Aequale No 1 in C minor WAB114 (1847)
Aequale No 2 in C minor WAB149 (1847)
An Aequale is a piece written for "equal parts" in this case three trombones, the sombre sounding brass associated with death and funeral rites.
Bruckner wrote these for the funeral of his aunt Rosalie Mayrhofer, in 1847, when he was 23 years old. This recording, with the original Bruckner manuscript on screen, was made in the Prinzregententheater, Munich, under the direction of Peter Dijkstra.
Jacques François Antoine Marie Ibert (1890–1962)
Cinq pièces en trio for oboe, clarinet and bassoon (1935)
Our choice of recording here is something of a halfway house. In place of the bassoon this trio has Gracie Potter on trombone. The other players are Spencer Rubin, oboe, and Alice McDonald, clarinet. They are winners of the Classical Music award at the New World Center in Miami, for National YoungArts Week 2020.
Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872–1958)
O taste and see
RVW's motet is based on text from Psalm 34.
O taste and see how gracious the Lord is
Blest is the man that trusteth in Him
You may heard it sung at our late Queen's funeral, as it was also sung at her Coronation. Indeed, Vaughan Williams wrote the SATB motet for the Coronation.
This is the recording from the recent funeral in Westminster Abbey, with the Gentlemen and Choristers of the Abbey Choir, and of the Choir of His Majesty's Chapel Royal, at St James's Palace. They are led by the Abbey's Organist and Master of the Choristers, James O'Donnell, with sub-organist Peter Holder playing the organ.
James O'Donnell became Professor of Organ at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music, Connecticut, in January 2023.

Amazing Grace
In this beautiful arrangement of the familiar tune, the Chicago Staff Band are joined by their colleagues from the Canadian Staff Band. So that explains the two different reds of the jackets!
Whose staff bands? Combined defence forces? Navy? Air Forces? Army? Now that's closer. There are clues. The colours on the Canadian music stand banners, and that little "S" on everyone's labels. Yes, they are Salvation Army Staff Bands. If you like, Head Office Bands.
