Loïc Georgeault
Loïc Georgeault is indebted to Jean Boyer and Liesbeth Schlumberger at the Lyon Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique, for his organ training. He completed his studies with the Diplôme National d’Etudes Supérieures Musicales, followed by the prestigious teaching diploma, the Certificat d’Aptitude à l’enseignement de l’orgue.
Under the Erasmus Programme he received tuition from Pieter van Dijk and Wolfgang Zerer at the Hochschule für Musik in Hamburg. He was also a student in the Paris area of both the Conservatoire of Rueil-Malmaison in the class of Susan Landale, and the Conservatoire of St Maur-des-Fossés, under Eric Lebrun.
Loïc Georgeault is currently cathedral organist at Rennes and St Malo. He divides his time between teaching organ and improvisation at the Conservatoire in St Malo, and concert work as soloist and in ensembles in France, Germany, England, the Netherlands, Poland, Switzerland and Japan. He is also studying hymnology with James Lyon who has encouraged him to share an interest in English music and the history of the country.
In 2012 Loïc founded a festival called La Route des Orgues en Pays de Saint-Malo, which offers a varied programme illustrating the wealth of instruments in St Malo and the surrounding region.
In 2007 Loïc Georgeault was appointed a resident associate musical adviser for the Académie Bach at Arques-la-Bataille, Normandy. This has led him and Florence Rousseau to offer guided tours of historic organs in Germany and the Netherlands.
In 2015 Loïc & Florence made a concert tour of abbeys and churches in France, Belgium and England, raising funds for a new organ in Kergonan Abbey, South Brittany, of which they are sponsors. They plan to return for a concert tour in Southern England in 2017.

The 2015 Tickell Organ is regularly used for School services and concerts. Today's is only the second public concert on the instrument, after David Briggs presented the Inaugural Concert in February 2016.
The organ was also heard on BBC Radio 3's Choral Evensong in May of this year, when the Girls and Men of Guildford Cathedral Choir broadcast from St John's. The cathedral has been undergoing substantial restoration work.

Our special concert on the 2015 Tickell organ in St John's School Chapel, opens with a composer considered to be at the high-point of French baroque, Nicolas de Grigny.
His Hymn, Ave Maris Stella (Hail, Star of the Sea), is based on the plainchant hymn in the service of Vespers.
This is one of five hymns for the Church seasons, published in de Grigny's organ book of 1699.
The organist in this performance is Frédéric Muñoz, at the organ of St Peter's Cathedral, Poitiers, France:

The next piece is self-recorded by Matthias Rascher on the 1986 Vleugels organ in the village church near his home in Knetzgau, Bavaria, Germany. He first shows us the recently ceiling frescoes before hopping swiftly onto the organ bench to play Buxtehude's Passacaglia in D minor:
For JS Bach's Chorale BWV 663, Allein Gott in der Höch sei Ehr, we have a performance by Bine-Katrine Bryndorf, although she doesn't mention the instrument. This recording could prove a challenge for those not used to reading
the C clef at speed as it appears in the score for both hands at certain points.
On the right is a performance by Aude Schumacher, on the organ in St James Church,
Lunéville, the old capital of the French Lorraine region.

Next Wim van Beek plays Georg Böhm's Praeludium, Fuga and Postludium in G minor,
on the Schnitger organ in St Martin's, Groningen, Netherlands.
Alternatively, on the right we have the same work in a recording on the harpsichord, played by Lorenzo Ghielmi:

Henri-Franck Beaupérin is organist at Angers Cathedral, France. Here he plays the Cavaillé-Coll organ which we hear in this recording of César Franck's Deuxième Choral en si mineur (2nd Choral in B minor):
Florence and Loïc have chosen Litanies by French composer Jehan Alain for the final piece in their concert.
In the recording below, we see and hear the greatly revered French organist Olivier Latry, playing Litanies,
at the end of a service in Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris. A superb finish to our organ concert.

And finally, you may like to explore the 5-minute video about organ scholars in Oxford's colleges,
at the foot of this linked page. It includes a couple of brief comments from Ken Tickell, designer of the St John's School organ. |
