Gus McQuade
Guitarist Gus McQuade currently studies at the Royal Academy of Music where he gained a scholarship to study with Professor Michael Lewin and Professor Stephen Goss.
In 2018 Gus was the winner of the Leamington Spa Music Competition and recently came second in both the Leicester Music Competition and the Blyth Watson Guitar Concerto Prize. During his time at the Academy he has played in masterclasses with some of the world's leading guitarists including David Russell, Fabio Zanon, and Roberto Aussel.
Gus is passionate about exploring the multitude of stylistic possibilities the guitar has to offer. Whether this is through his compositions, arranging, or collaborating with other musicians, Gus draws on the guitar's rich cultural diversity. A recent collaboration with the singer and double bassist Eleanor Grant, featured the music
of Joni Mitchell and George Gershwin along with songs for the lute by John Dowland and Henry Purcell.
His compositional output includes music for solo guitar, guitar with cello, double bass and voice, as well as songs for guitar and soprano. He has also arranged music from the likes of Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays for solo guitar to Debussy’s La Soirée dans Grenade for guitar duo.
Gus is a dynamic musician who regularly works with composers to expand the guitar repertoire. He recently gave the world premiere of Margarida Gonçalves’ Three Songs for voice and guitar and also recently recorded a new piece by Su Ting Han titled Bilita for guitar, double bass and voice.

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)
from Violin Partita No 2 in D minor, BWV 1004 (1720)
V Ciaccona
We turn next to an audio recording of Andrés Segovia performing Bach's Ciaccona. You may detect a recurring bass line, technically referred to as a "ground bass". This is a feature of the Chaconne form.
Segovia produced a guitar transcription of the piece, although these days guitarists often play from the original violin score.
Sir William Turner Walton (1902-1983)
5 Bagatelles (1970-71) written for Julian Bream, dedicated to Malcolm Arnold
I Allegro lively, fast
II Lento slow
III Alla Cubana Cuban style
IV Sempre espressivo always expressive
V Con Slancio with momentum, enthusiasm
If you would like to follow the rather demanding score, that recording is by Stephanie Jones.
Another little find is a 1981 documentary piece for The South Bank Show in which Julian Bream plays the second Bagatelle for Sir William and Susana at their home on the Italian island of Ischia.
The performer in the complete video recording is Isabella Selder.
