John Sharples
John Sharples began organ lessons while a pupil at Hipperholme Grammar School. His tutors then were Nicholas Kerrison and Philip Tordoff (Organist of Halifax Parish Church). Later he spent time as a student at Chester College during which time he sang in the Cathedral Choir.
He moved to London in 1984 and began organ studies with Ian Curror (Organist of the Royal Hospital Chelsea) and in 1989 became an Associate of the Royal College of Organists. In 1995 John achieved Fellowship of London College of Music in Organ Performance. He also played for services in Lambeth Palace for 15 years while working for the central offices of the Church of England. Currently he is organist at St Nicholas Charlwood and also plays at Second Church of Christ Scientist in London and is a deputy organist of Arundel Cathedral. John has given recitals in Southwark Cathedral and St Paul's Cathedral in London, and also in St Thomas' Church in New York's Fifth Avenue. John has played in many venues in the UK and abroad accompanying choirs. He is a Fellow of London College of Music and an Associate of the Royal College of Organists. John is also President of the Crawley and Horsham District Organists' Association. |

The Christ Church organ was built by Hill, Norman & Beard in 1970 with 16 stops, using some pipes from previous organs plus some neo-baroque sounds typical of the 1960's and '70's (Chimney Flute and Fifteenth on open-foot voicing, like the Royal Festival Hall organ). In 1995, HNB moved some loud stops from the Great to a new double case in the nave, 6 stops were added, and the tone was refined. In summer 2015 the nave organ was re-voiced to produce a more robust tone. |

John opens with Elgar's magnificent Imperial March, played here by Ben Sheen on the substantial, moved, and restored Hill Norman & Beard organ at Scotch College, Hawthorn, Victoria:
Pierre Astor has the delight of being organist of St Firmin, Firminy, in the Loire département of France (near St-Etienne). What makes his role so enjoyable is that he plays the historic unrestored 1902 tracker organ built by Charles Michel-Merklin. This is our first choice for Bach's organ transcription of Fasch's Trio Sonata in C minor:
If you prefer your Bach transcriptions with less tracker clatter, try this recording by Ulf Norberg,

Next we hear the organ in Los Angeles new (ie, post-1994's earthquake) Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, Los Angeles. There's a story here too so do click on the link. Mark Husey plays an arrangement of Fauré's celebrated Pavane:
Rob Charles from Swansea is the organist in this recording from All Saints Church, Penarth, South Wales, where he plays the Compton organ and most of the notes of Scott Joplin's classic The Entertainer:
Sometimes it's difficult to match the item that appears in the concert. Handel's Largo played on the organ is one such, so let's instead listen to the original, from the opera Serse, or Xerxes, and including the recitative that precedes it. Incidentally, you may notice that Handel didn't mark the piece Largo, but Largehetto:
Next the Bourrée from Handel's Water Music:
Diane Bish introduces the popular Hornpipe from Handel's Water Music - first played, she claims, on the Tayms River.
The organ, in De Vos Chapel, Fort Lauderdale Florida is a hybrid that bears Ms Bish's name.
The electronic sections are by Allen Organs and the pipework by Burton K Tidwell who voiced the finished instrument:

In the next recording Jordi Franch Parella plays the organ in the gothic Catalan Basilica of Saint Mary of the See of Manresa, and the work is the Vaughan Williams setting of Greensleeves:
This final recording might seem like something we had to search high and low for - but no, it was at the top of the youtube search. You can't get much more American than Stars and Stripes Forever, played on the organ of the US Naval Academy Chapel ! And while there are few good reasons to put a Zymbalstern stop on an organ, this piece is certainly one of them. It's the last sound you'll hear from us today! Monte Maxwell is the organist:
We hope you have enjoyed your Concert at Home
