Duo Bayanello:
Duo Bayanello is a young and inspiring new ensemble consisting of two contrasting instruments, resulting in a surprisingly harmonious tone: cello and accordion. This connection was said by Rostrapovich to be a more organic combination of sounds than cello and piano, and brings a bigger contribution to accordion chamber music repertoire than any other.
Both studying at the Royal Academy of Music in London, Cecilia Bignall, cello, and Iosif Purits, accordion, have performed around the world, both in solo and chamber music projects.
Cecilia won the Ian Alexander Scholarship to the Royal Academy to study with Robert Cohen, and was awarded the Montefiore Prize. She has performed at the Wigmore Hall, Colston Hall, the Norfolk and Norwich Festival, and the Aurora Festival in Sweden, among others.
Iosif is a prize-winner of more than 30 International competitions. He has performed at Carnegie Hall, The Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory, George Weston Recital Hall, Nybrokajen Concert Hall, Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and UNESCO among others. In 2013 Iosif won the ABRSM International Postgraduate Award, bringing him to London for his post-graduate studies at the Royal Academy.
In the same year Cecilia travelled to Moscow with her quartet, performing two Russian Premiers with renowned accordionist Owen Murray. The idea of bringing the two instruments together was born in Moscow, resulting in this exciting new ensemble.
Duo Bayanello have received coaching and masterclasses from distinguished soloists Owen Murray, Robert Cohen, Friedrich Lips and Maria Stefano Pietrodarchi. They have performed throughout London, in several concerts at the Royal Academy of Music, and in April 2015 they performed at the prestigious International House of Music in Moscow.
Their repertoire covers a wide range of musical genres and periods, from JSBach, to Astor Piazzolla, to Sofia Gubaidalina and Ilkka Kuusisto. Original works by composer Freya Waley-Cohen, cellist Cecilia Bignall and vibraphonist Ralph Wyld are currently in progress for the ensemble.

Bayanello
Cello and accordion, accordion and cello, breathe a special blend of sound in Duo Bayanello – with intensity they shake and vibrate – body language swimming in amorphous drift of nuance deep and subtle. They writhe, sinuous and strong, all curves and angles; volume matches contrast resonant in slides and scoops, and fine-tuned tilt of head mercurial, expressive eyebrows lifted; hands in several places seem to simultaneously execute 'midst skeins of hair in ponytail and fringes, ever dancing with the bow, great waves of synchronicity to syncopated beat, staccato and vibrato; aura of variety, in bayanello duo. Peter Horsfield 24/9/2015 Inspired by the lunchtime concert performed at Leatherhead Methodist Church on 24th September 2015 by Duo Bayanello: Iosif Purits, bayan/ accordion; and Cecilia Bignall, cello. |

De Falla's Suite Populaire Espagnole is based on his 1914 work Siete Canciones populares Españolas. While we hear just four of the movements in today's concert, here is a complete performance with cellist Hai-Ye Ni - her excellent piano accompanist is not credited, but it seems likely he is on the staff of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music:
It isn't always an easy matter to match the instrument combination we hear on the day to the recordings available online. Whereas for the De Falla we found a cello recording, for Bach's Sonata No 3 for Viola da Gamba and Harpsichord BWV 1029 we have found an accordion recording of the 1st movement, with a clarinet. It is a lively piece, marked Vivace:
Here is the complete Sonata, on original instruments - Viola da Gamba and cembalo - harpsichord.
We return to San Francisco, to a Noontime Concert in Old St Mary's Cathedral where
Farley Pearce plays the gamba with Yuko Tanaka at the harpsichord.

For our performance of Efrem Podgaits' Ave Maria the instrument combination is cello and piano.
He has also written versions for saxophone and bayan and for saxophone and chamber orchestra.
Our cellist in this recording is Alexander Bouzlov, with pianist Sviatoslav lips.
We offer too a link to Podgaits' own website (in English) which has many samples of his works.

Cellist Jacqueline Phillips is a great Piazzolla fan and has played us his Libertango on solo cello, and Le Grand Tango with pianist Richard Black. Indeed, Iosif Purits in his first concert at LMC last November played Libertango with his colleague, the Polish accordion player Bartosz Glowacki.
Today we hear Le Grand Tango on cello and bayan - and we are able to match that combination in this recording:
