Midori Komachi, violin
Born in 1988 in Japan, Midori Komachi began playing the violin at the age of seven, and at 12 was accepted into the Basel Music University to study with Adelina Oprean. She then made her debut with the Zurich Chamber Orchestra conducted by Howard Griffiths, and since has played as a soloist with various orchestras. She has performed as a soloist and recitalist around the globe in venues including Tonhalle Zurich, Muza Kawasaki(Japan), Philharmony Warsaw, St.Martin-in-the-fields, Bristol Cathedral, and Gallery Pulitika (Croatia). She has also performed in music festivals in Hungary, Holland and France.
Currently Midori is studying at the Royal Academy of Music with Maurice Hasson, where she has been supported by the Seary Charitable Trust and the William Barry Trust. She is a member of an emerging young ensemble, the Toki Quartet. In 2006 she entered the Royal Academy of Music to study with Tomotada Soh, and in June 2010 she completed her Bachelor of Music Diploma with First Class Honours.
Midori has been awarded several prizes including Hattori Foundation Junior Award, Seary Trust award, and RAM Honorary Patrons Development Award.
She is also the laureate of competitions such as Dame Ruth Railton Prize, Harold Craxton Prize, and the Max Pirani Prize.
As a chamber musician, she has performed in prestigious venues such as Wigmore Hall, and Steinway Hall in London. In 2008 she was invited to the Takefu International Music Festival in Japan to perform in a string ensemble with professors Stephan Picard, Nobuko Imai and Stephan Forck.

Carlos Guerrero, piano
Carlos Guerrero started his musical education with teacher Ángel Sanzo and Javier Herreros. He completed his First Degree with Distinction in Badajoz Conservatory (Spain), studying piano with Alexander Kandelaki and chamber music with Pablo de Naverán.
Later, Carlos Guerrero studied a MA at the Royal Academy of Music with Pascal Nemirovski and Michael Dussek. He is currently studying with Roger Vignoles and has also gained training through masterclasses by artists of international prestige, including Brigitte Engerer, Luiz de Moura Castro, Svetlana Navasardyan, Nino Kereselidze, Pascal Devoyon, Joaquim Soriano or Blanca Uribe.
Carlos was funded by the Rotary Club in Spain and Caja España. His piano prizes include: 3rd place (Category A) in the Ricard Viñes Competition, Catalunya; First place and Special Jury Prize in the National Soloists Competition Angel Barrios, in Granada; Music Prize of the Andalucian Regional Government.
Carlos has given solo and chamber music recitals all around Spain in theatres like Manuel de Falla in Granada, Lopez de Ayala in Badajoz or Fundación Lázaro Galdiano. He has performed as soloist with various Spanish youth orchestras. In 2010, he participated in the Schumann Festival at the Royal Academy of Music and gave a Charity Concert for Burma in London’s Christ Church Spitalfields Venue.

William Cowper it was who said "Variety's the very spice of life." If the Variety of the programmes of these Music on Thursdays concerts, and the variety of today's programme from St John's School, are anything to judge by then that is certainly a true statement. We were treated to music from Borowski to Schubert, from Ridout to J Strauss, from Sondheim to Rogers and to Gershwin. The talents shown by these students was remarkable. We not only heard solos on the violin, trombone, piano and alto saxophone, but also singing from an alto and a baritone, and a soprano who brought the concert to its close with a delightful rendering of 'Mein Herr Marquis' from Der Fledermaus. Thank you St John's for bringing such a range of talents for our enjoyment. We wish them well in their musical futures. FP. |

Graham Davies, Organist and Choirmaster of St Mary & St Nicholas Church Leatherhead, will play works by composers who greatly admired Bach, and others that reflect early influences on him by composers including Pachelbel and Buxtehude.
The second half of the concert will include works by the great man himself, finishing in grand style with the Toccata and Fugue in D minor.
Music of Bach’s period gives the opportunity for both the church’s historic 18th century Thomas Parker Pipe Organ and the more substantial digital organ to be heard in the same concert.
Graham Davies’ other engagements this year include concerts at St Michael and All Angels, Croydon on April 11th, and later at St Bride’s, Fleet Street. In 2011 Graham's concerts included the new Skrabl organ at St Michael's the Archangel, Lyme Regis, a lunchtime concert on the Frobenius organ in Kingston Parish Church, a Sunday evening concert in St Paul's Cathedral, London and two further concerts in Chicago USA.

Thomas Parker Pipe Organ of 1766
Any concert in which the restored 18th century Thomas Parker Pipe Organ is played has to acknowledge the instrument as one of the stars of the occasion. The parishioners and people of Leatherhead are justly proud of this historic instrument, and of the efforts they put into the fund-raising and many other arrangements for its restoration.

We are delighted to welcome back cellist Jacqueline Phillips who many will have heard playing for the Music on Thursdays launch event in the Swan Centre on 1st March 2012.
A brilliant ‘cellist from an early age, Jacqueline studied with legendary teachers including William Pleeth, Amaryllis Fleming, Aldo Perisot, Joan Dickson and has emerged as an extraordinarily versatile and well-rounded musician; undoubtedly one of the finest British ‘cellists of her generation, with a career that has taken her round the world, including a trip to Italy to win the Rovere d’Oro International competition in Genoa.
She is in much demand as a free-lance chamber and orchestral musician, guest leading the Irish Chamber Orchestra, guest sub-principle of BBC Phil and guest co- leading the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and BBC Concert Orchestra.
She founded her own group known as the Brook Ensemble and this special ensemble is the first small group to have continually given a portion of the fees to cancer charities most recently Marie Curie Cancer Care.
Recently, Jacqueline in her efforts to push the boundaries of cello technique has specialised in adapting known violin virtuoso solos, performances including Saint-Saens “Rondo Capriccioso” and other violin virtuoso concert pieces ! Indeed, she transcribed several of the pieces in today's concert from their original guitar settings so they could be played on the cello.

While reading Music at King’s College, London, Jane studied flute at the Royal Academy of Music with Jaime Martin, Michael Cox and Robert Manasse. In her final year she won The Principal’s Award – a scholarship to attend the Lake Placid International Flute Seminar in New York State with Julius Baker and Sebastian Bell. After university Jane continued her studies with Andrew Nicholson.
Jane has had the opportunity to travel a great deal through music with various orchestras and chamber ensembles, touring extensively throughout Europe, Africa, North and South America. Living in London she freelances with a wide variety of orchestras, including regular work with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Welsh National Opera and European Union Chamber Orchestra under such prestigious conductors as Daniele Gatti, Leonard Slatkin, Yuri Temirkanov, Vasily Petrenko, Andrew Litton, Tadaaki Otaka and Kazushi Ono. She has recorded for BBC Radio 3, Classic FM as well as appearing on TV and film soundtracks.
As a keen supporter of music education, Jane has worked regularly with the Philharmonia programmes as well as tutoring for the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and at the Dartington International Summer School.
Jane has performed the Reinecke Flute Concerto with the Ernest Read Symphony Orchestra, Mozart’s D major throughout North America which was broadcast live on television and Bach’s B minor Suite with King’s College Chamber Orchestra. Recently Jane recorded the Mozart Concerto in G for BBC Radio 4.
Jane performs on a handmade 14K rose gold Powell flute with an Emmanuel headjoint, as well as a silver Louis Lot flute made by Henri Villette.
