Daniel Collins
Daniel Collins began singing at the age of seven as a chorister at Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford. After obtaining a first-class degree in music from Magdalen College, Oxford, he continued his studies at the Royal College of Music under Ashley Stafford. Since then, he has performed extensively around the UK, Europe and the Americas as a consort singer and soloist, and since 2014 has been a regular member of The Sixteen.
With The Sixteen, Daniel has recently performed as a soloist in a series of Purcell’s Welcome Songs and Odes at the Wigmore Hall, Sir James MacMillan’s Stabat Mater at the Barbican and on tour, Buxtehude’s Membra Jesu Nostri and Bach's Magnificat in D, alongside a busy schedule of the Choral Pilgrimage, tours and recordings.
Most recently he was the alto soloist for The Sixteen's performances of Vivaldi's Gloria. He also sings regularly with Tenebrae, The Marian Consort and the Gabrieli Consort, amongst others, and was involved in the widely acclaimed performances of Handel's Messiah with Emmanuelle Haïm and Le Concert d’Astrée. He recently performed Vaughan Williams's Songs of Travel in a recital to mark the 60th anniversary of the composer's death, in Vaughan Williams's parish church, St Martin's, Dorking
Future solo engagements include performances of Bach's St Matthew Passion, Handel's Belshazzar and further performances of Macmillan's Stabat Mater, alongside further Purcell Welcome Songs and Handel's Israel in Egypt with The Sixteen.

'tis Nature's Voice
The performer here is countertenor Lisandro Pelegrina, accompanied by
José Luis Di Marco, cello, Daniel Ganum, theorbo, and Gustavo Richter, keyboard:
from Come Ye Sons of Art Z323 (1694) (written as a birthday ode for Queen Mary)
Strike the Viol
For this recording we hear one of my favourite countertenors, Andreas Scholl. He is accompanied by Accademia Bizantina, in which you will hear violins, violas, viola da gamba, cellos, double basses, bassoon, lute, harpsichord, and recorders:
from incidental music for Oedipus Z583 (1692)
Music for a While
This time you get to see Andreas Scholl, with his wife Tamar Halperin, (at the time his fiancée), in a recording made at their home in Kiedrich, near Darmstadt, for Netherlands Radio 4.
Gentle shepherds, you that know Z464 (1687)
A Pastoral Elegy on the Death of Mr John Playford
John Playford came up last week as the publisher of The Division Violin, variations on various grounds - a gentleman of some significance in the musical life of 17th century London.
In this Wigmore Hall Live recording we hear countertenor Iestyn Davies with the Ensemble Guadagni :
from the semi-opera King Arthur, or The British Worthy z628 (1691)
Fairest Isle
Two unexpected recordings here. James Bowman was the idol of many fans of the alto voice through the 1970s to the turn of the century. Here he is in 2005 in a recording with regular accompanist Kenneth Weiss.
If you would like to follow the score, on the right we hear soprano Andrea Haines:

George Frideric Handel (1685-1759)
from the oratorio Belshazzar HWV 61 (1744)
O Sacred Oracles (from Belshazzar)
Robert E Lee, countertenor, with Eric Sedgwick, piano:
from the oratorio Esther HWV 50 (1732)
How can I stay when Love invites (from Esther)
This recording from Harry Christophers' The Sixteen features tenor Tom Randle:
from the oratorio Jephtha HWV 70 (1751)
Waft her angels through the skies (from Jeptha)
Our final recording in this Handel section of the concert brings the lyric tenor John Mark Ainsley, making for an interesting comparison with the textures of the countertenor voice. This 1987 recording with The King's Consort was made at St Paul's Churchm, New Southgate, N London:
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)
from church cantata for Palm Sunday Himmelskönig, sei willkommen (King of Heaven, welcome) BWV 182 (1714)
Leget euch dem Heiland unter (Lay yourselves 'neath the Saviour)
We hear the Netherlands Bach Collegium, countertenor Pieter van Leusink, and recorder player Sytse Buwalda:
Cantata Widerstehe doch der Sünde BWV 54 (1711-1714)
Just resist Sin
This really is the best of both worlds! We get to follow the music, plus, the performance is by Andreas Scholl in 1988, with the Collegium Vocale Orchestra.
On the right you can listen to recordings by each of these countertenors, to decide which you feel sings this short Cantata the best.
Markus Forster, Andreas Scholl, Matthew White, or Gérard Lesne?
I may have revealed my hand here. I enjoyed Scholl, and at a very different pace, Gérard Lesne.

ENCORE:
Yes, I am slipping in an encore piece, one which we will not be able to hear at the live concert because it requires
two countertenors. I have sung this myself, but those days are some way past!
What you will hear seems to be the encore to a concert in which
countertenors Philippe Jaroussky and Pascal Bertin have performed this famous duet.
But hold on to your hat, because you are in for an exciting ride!
Henry Purcell
from Come Ye Sons of Art Z323 (1694) (written as a birthday ode for Queen Mary)
Sound the Trumpet (alto duet)
Le Concert d'Astrée, directed by Emmanuelle Haïm
