Composer's Notes:
This piece was originally written and performed in 1991 and subsequently revised and added to in 2007 & 2011. The original three movements (#2, 5 & 6) are based on a poem with the same title by DH Lawrence. The further three movements are based on Tanaka by Yosano Akiko.
All six movements should have a sense of freedom and timelessness (indeed time
signatures are for guidance only, as opposed to strictness).
There should also be a quality of space and sonority.

David Massey
David Massey began his studies with David Burden at his local music centre in Hertfordshire. In 2006 he was the strings finalist in the BBC Young Musician competition, performing Rodrigo’s Fantasia para un gentilhombre live on BBC 2 from the Sage Gateshead. Next, he went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music, where he graduated with distinction in 2010 and furthered his studies with an MMus in 2012.
He has also performed at venues such as Wigmore Hall, Purcell Room, King’s Place, St Martin in the Fields, and has frequently performed in chamber and orchestral contexts including Southbank Sinfonia and Chineke!, from Mozart and Respighi to John Adams and Peter Maxwell Davies including the UK premiere of Timothy Walker’s Guitar Concerto.
Long standing chamber music projects the Andrews Massey Duo (flute and guitar) and CarmenCo (mezzo-soprano/flute and two guitars) have led to a variety of successful recording projects and an Arts Council funded tour of “Creating Carmen”, a
concert play by Clare Norburn of The Telling.
His solo performances have been described as “intense and intimate”, marked by a
“remarkable energy and range of tone and dynamics”. His sound and communication of
musical structure were praised by Julian Bream. He has received tuition and masterclasses from David Russell, Fabio Zanon, John Mills and Timothy Walker, combining a love for both the traditional guitar repertoire as well as contemporary and new works, of which he has premiered several.
From performances in multi-storey carparks to art galleries, he is a musician willing to take risks and try new approaches. David’s arrangements of Schubert, Mozart and Dvorak are played by guitarists and ensembles around the world. His first album of original songs, “A Wild Dream”, was released digitally in August 2023. A follow-up will be coming soon!

Martin Gaughan (b 1968)
The Evening Land (2007, revd 2011)
Martin Gaughan's music is dark, atmospheric and often nocturnal. This, in part, is due to him being an insomniac. Therefore his work is often infused with images of night and the gothic. There seems to be no recording of "The Evening Land" so here, instead, is a short piece entitled "Night Shadows Mandala 7", performed by violinist Dmitro Lynnyk: [2:55]
Francisco de Asis Tarrega y Eixea (1852-1909)
Recuerdos de la Alhambra [5:10}
Memories of the Alhambra (1899)
From the Asamsaal in Ettlingen Palace, Germany, which is about 5 miles from Karlsruhe and only 9 miles from the French border town of Lauterbourg, we have this performance by Ana Vidovic, recorded in 2019.
Ettlingen Palace chapel was dedicated to St John Nepomuk. It is decorated with 30 frescos by German baroque painter and architect Cosmas Damian Asam (1686–1739) depicting the martyrdom of St John Nepomuk. They are the only remaining frescos by Asam in the Upper Rhine. Nowadays, the chapel is used as a concert hall
