Juliet Evans
Juliet Evans is a recorder player from London, currently studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Taking a keen interest in solo and chamber repertoire from the medieval to the contemporary, she founded the recorder quartet Aurai in 2017 with fellow students at the Guildhall School. They have gone on to perform at the Greenwich International Early Music Festival, have given recitals at many venues around London, and recently were awarded the Royal Wind Music prize for the outstanding performance of a work from the Renaissance period at the ORDA festival 2019.
The group also takes a keen interest in musical education, having developed workshops for the UK’s Centre for Young Musicians which they have taken into schools around the country.
Juliet’s love for contemporary music has led to Aurai’s first commissioned work, and in summer 2019 she participated in the launch of the electro-acoustic project I Can’t Get Out Of Bed, as part of London’s Culture Mile summer programme. She was also selected for the prestigious Gstaad Baroque Academy, performing in masterclasses and concerts with some of the world’s best Early Music specialists.
Outside performing, Juliet writes both poetry and arts journalism, and enjoys dinghy sailing.

Thomas Ang
Pianist Thomas Ang studied at the Royal Academy of Music with Hamish Milne and Diana Ketler, and at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama with Andrew West and Eugene Asti. He has won prizes for his performances of Beethoven, Frederick Delius, Arthur Bliss and the contemporary piano repertoire, and has been praised for his thoughtful and critical programming and excellent technique.
He has also earned recognition as a specialist in the music of Nikolai Kapustin, having played and conducted world premieres of his compositions in the UK, US, Singapore, Australia and Taiwan.
With a strong interest in contemporary music, Thomas has performed John Cage at the Purcell Room and Boulez at the Aldeburgh Music Festival. His piano duo (Duo Ex Libris) performed the complete non-sonata piano works of Boulez, including the two books of Structures in London; they have also played various recital programmes in Australia and around the UK and made multiple
appearances on Radio 3.
In other chamber groups he maintains a strong interest in unusual repertoire of the late Romantic, as well as mid-20th-century British music. He has worked with conductors such as Susanna Mälkki, Clement Power, Sian Edwards and Jonathan Berman as well as composers Oliver Knussen, John Adams and Nikolai Kapustin in playing their music. He has also played in classes by Stephen Hough, Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Imogen Cooper, Kathryn Stott and Yevgeny Sudbin among others.
Off the concert stage, Thomas works as a répétiteur and ballet pianist. He sometimes accompanies and improvises for silent film, appearing at various festivals and events. Thomas also plays the violin, and writes poetry and piano transcriptions of songs and symphonies.

Ever wondered how modern music looks on paper?
Here's an opportunity to follow the score as Julia Whybrow plays recorder and Nora Mulder, piano.
Thymehaze exploits extended techniques for both recorder (microtones, glissando, unusual vibratos) and
piano (harmonics, glissando on the strings, silently depressed keys) to generate its strange, melancholy atmosphere.

Jean-Marc Andrieu introduces his playing by setting the scene for the piece. He explains: we are taking Dowland's Pavan Lachrymae, on which he himself wrote lute variations, and which was borrowed by Byrd, and later by the blind nobleman Jacob van Eyck, a flutist and composer from Utrecht.
He was employed to play the carillon of Utrecht Cemetery and was a renowned expert in bell playing, production and tuning. Van Eyck published 140 flute tunes and variations in his Der Fluyten Lust-hof, or The Flute's Pleasure Garden which can be viewed online at IMSLP (an extract is shown above beside the programme).
In this concert form the Orangerie at Rochemontès, near Toulouse, Jean-Marc Andrieu's accompanist on the clavoirganum (harpsichord upper manual, organ lower manual!) is Yasuko Uyama-Bouvard.
They begin with Dowland's Pavan itself, continue with William Byrd's harpsichord variations, and finally van Eyck's variations for flute and harpsichord: (to skip J-M's talk, the music begins around 1m20):

Here is one. 15-year-old Mu-Chien Chen, accompanied by Ding-Heng Wu, plays Monti's famous Czardas, on a Marsyas rosewood soprano recorder, at the 2010 Concert of Taiwan/Japan Recorder Competition Winners, held in Taiwan's National Concert Hall:
