Tailleferre Ensemble . . .

. . . is a new chamber collective founded by Nicola Hands and Penelope Smith, with the aim of promoting women in music. We are a flexible chamber ensemble, performing recitals of differing instrumentation and genre.

Penelope Smith

Penelope Smith graduated with a Masters from @RCMLondon where she won the oboe prize.

She has performed with orchestras such as the London Mozart Players, RTE Concert Orchestra and Brandenburg Sinfonia as well as given solo and chamber music recitals throughout the UK.

She co-founded Tailleferre Ensemble in 2019.

Nicola Hands

Nicola Hands is a busy freelance oboist, who graduated from the Royal Academy of Music Masters programme in 2013 with a Distinction, having won the oboe and cor anglais prizes there.

She was principal cor anglais with Orquestra do Norte and the oboe/cor anglais player for The Light Princess at the National Theatre. She has played with the Philharmonia, RSNO, Birmingham Ballet and Orpheus Sinfonia as a freelancer.

She is very active as a soloist and chamber musician, having performed numerous concertos and recitals.
In 2019 she co-founded the Tailleferre Ensemble and has released two albums, Light & Shade and Phoenix.


Lana Bode

Lana Bode is an American-British pianist, programmer and artistic director, whose performances have been described as ‘absolutely thrilling’ (Opera Today) and ‘expertly calibrated’ (BBC Music Magazine). She specialises in contemporary music and cross-arts programming.

Lana’s recital career has taken her from major London venues to festivals around the UK such as Aldeburgh Festival, Barbican Hall, Kings Place, Purcell Room, Snape Proms and Wigmore Hall.

In 2019 she released her highly-acclaimed debut album I and Silence: Women’s Voices in American Song with the mezzo Marta Fontanals-Simmons. 

In the 2020-21 season, Lana will perform with the Tailleferre Ensemble, return to the Oxford Lieder Festival to premiere Charlotte Bray’s Crossing Faultlines, and record a new disc with soprano Samantha Crawford (Delphian Records).


Nicky Crowe

Nicky Crowe graduated from the Royal College of Music with a Master of Music (distinction), where she was the winner of the RCM flute prize and was generously supported by the Worshipful Company of Musicians.

Upon graduating, she performed with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the English National Ballet, and was a co-principal of the Southbank Sinfonia in 2014.

She returned to Australia in 2015 to take up a fellowship position with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra (SSO), later performing on contract with the SSO and Opera Australia.
