Mark Brafield
Mark Brafield has studied the organ with Stephen Farr, David Sanger and Dame Gillian Weir. He held an Organ Scholarship with a Scholarship in English Literature at Trinity College, Oxford, and is a Fellow and Trustee of the Royal College of Organists.
Mark now combines a legal profession with a career as a concert organist. He performs regularly at leading venues in this country, including Westminster Abbey and St Paul’s Cathedral. He is in increasing demand as a performer overseas, with recent recitals including the Leonhardskirche in Basle, St Thomas’s Fifth Avenue, New York, and Notre Dame in Paris.

The Christ Church organ was built by Hill, Norman & Beard in 1970 with 16 stops, using some pipes from previous organs plus some neo-baroque sounds typical of the 1960's and '70's (Chimney Flute and Fifteenth on open-foot voicing, like the Royal Festival Hall organ). In 1995, HNB moved some loud stops from the Great to a new double case in the nave, 6 stops were added, and the tone was refined. In summer 2015 the nave organ was re-voiced to produce a more robust tone. |

Mark Brafield opens today's concert with the joyful sound of Bach's Concerto in G major,
after a concerto for strings by Johann Ernst, Prince of Sachsen Weimar.
In this recording we hear the organ in Hedvig Leonora Church, Stockholm, Sweden, played by Ulf Norberg.
For our recording of Wesley's Air and Gavotte we have found another gifted young organist from the Netherlands.
Here is Iddo van der Giessen, at the organ in Amsterdam's Westerkerk. Given the wide organ front you will see that
Iddo requires the assistance of two stop pullers (or registration assistants).
This piece may be familiar as in England it is often played at weddings, during the signing of the registers.

I don't believe we have ever had an organist playing in tails before, but here, with Mendelssohn's
Sonata No 4 in Bb major, is Cristiano Rizzotto, at the organ in
First-Plymouth Congregational Church, Lincoln Nebraska.

Our recording of Vierne's Arabesque has the printed music on screen for you to follow. The organist is Dragan Trajer, and the virtual organ is of the Mutin Cavaillé-Coll in Notre-Dame de Metz, France.
There is also a Mutin Cavaillé-Coll in St Michael's Abbey, Farnborough. You will find details of monthly organ concerts on the instrument on this link.
Our performer for the final work in today's concert is American concert organist Christopher Houlihan.
He plays the two movements of Saint-Saëns' Fantaisie in Eb major on the organ in
Broadway Baptist Church, Fort Worth Texas.
