Timothy Guntrip
|
Timothy spent over a decade living in Malta where, following studies in piano and organ, he held a number of positions in various churches on the island, and performed widely as an accompanist and soloist both in Malta and abroad. In 2012, Timothy returned to the UK where he has held successive posts as organist in churches in Lewes, Croydon and Rotherfield, before being appointed Assistant Director of Music at Holy Cross Uckfield in 2018. |
Tim is accompanist and assistant director to the mixed-voice choir Stag Montem Chorem, as well as leading a busy freelance career as an organist. Recent recital venues have included Southwark Cathedral and Holy Trinity Sloane Square, and St Michael’s Croydon.
Aside from organ playing, Tim works for an organ building firm based in Sussex and assists with the maintenance of many instruments across the South of England (including the Christ Church Hill, Norman & Beard).

The Christ Church organ was built by Hill, Norman & Beard in 1970 with 16 stops, using some pipes from previous organs plus some neo-baroque sounds typical of the 1960's and '70's (Chimney Flute and Fifteenth on open-foot voicing, like the Royal Festival Hall organ). In 1995, HNB moved some loud stops from the Great to a new double case in the nave, 6 stops were added, and the tone was refined. In summer 2015 the nave organ was re-voiced to produce a more robust tone. |

We open with a recording of probably the only remaining unmodified Esaias Compenius organ. This 1610 instrument is housed in the Chapel of Frederiksborg Castle, Copenhagen. The Sweelinck piece is played here by Ton Koopman.

Next we turn to the Abdijkerk Loosduinen (Loosduinen Abbey Church) The Hague, Netherlands.
The abbey church was built in the 12th century as the chapel to a monastery, long since demolished. For centuries it was a place of international pilgrimage for childless women because countess Margaretha van Hennebergh and all her children were buried there. The countess gave birth to 365 sons and daughters on Good Friday in 1276. The myth goes that the countess was punished to die with all her children because she had driven away a beggar. After being attacked by 'Spaniards and beggars' the tower and the pile of rubble that was left of the original church were handed to the Protestant Reformed Church in 1580. They rebuilt it to what we see today.
The organist here is Olivier Penin, at the Reichner-Bätz-Steendam organ (1780/1792/1856/2006):

We move next to the famous Victoria Hall, Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, where Jonathan Scott is performing on the 1888/1922 Conacher/Willis organ. Our old Spanish master used to insist that this was one of only three British places whose names were translated in that language. Edimburgo, Londres, and, due to the worldwide importance of its potteries, Estoche sobre la Trienta.

Daniela Timokhine plays for an 'Organ Music on Market Day' concert in Freiburg Minster Cathedral. Unusually, this cathedral does not belong to the Roman Catholic Church. Originally in the ownership of 'the people of Freiburg' it is now owned by a charitable trust.
The cathedral has five organs, the St Mary Organ which we shall hear (the cathedral is dedicated to the Virgin Mary), the St Michael Organ, the Swallowsnest Organ, the Choir Organ and in the choir practice room, an Auxiliary Organ.

First let's hear an enthusiastic church choir singing the original melody. They are the combined Choirs of People’s Presbyterian Church and Central Presbyterian Church of Denver, Colorado.
On the right is a recording of John Behnke's organ work based on this melody, and performed by Eric Osborne, on the 3-manual 1950 Casavant Freres organ that is about as combined as the two churches that united at this site in Owen Sound, Ontario.
Organ Historical Society note reads: Retained some pipework from existing 1890 RS Williams organ; 1981, III-IV Mixture (232 pipes) added to the Great and 16' Cornopean half-length extension added; 1988, Swell Cornopean revoiced, with new shallots and tongues - "pipes are quite 'buried' and need more sound"; 1989 8' Principal added 1989; 1991 49-pipe 8' Bourdon added to the Great, with notes 1-12 from the Doppelflote; upon the 2012 merger of Division St with Knox United Church to form Colonial Shores United Church using the Division St facility, 1919 3/32 Casavant Op. 794 was combined with the Division St organ, retaining and rebuilding the Knox console.

The organ was rebuilt by Alfred E Davies & Son of Northampton, in 1961. There are two organs in the Chapel the main organ in the western gallery, and a small organ at the East end. Both are playable from the gallery console:
