Joseph Tong enjoys a busy and varied career as soloist, duo pianist, chamber musician, Festival Director and teacher. He made his Wigmore Hall debut in 1997 as winner of the Maisie Lewis Young Artists Award and now gives regular solo recitals throughout the UK and Europe, most recently in Germany, Spain and Finland where he performed at the Steinway Piano Gallery in Helsinki, Sibelius’s home Ainola and at the Sibelius Museum in Turku last summer.
Joseph also took part in the Sibelius150 celebrations in Finland in 2015, giving recitals at the Helsinki Music Centre, Hämeenlinna Town Hall and at the composer’s house Ainola. His first Sibelius CD recording on the Quartz label was released the same year, to critical acclaim in the UK and abroad, followed by Vol. 2 in 2017 which has received glowing reviews in the Sunday Times, International Piano, Classical Source and Fanfare Magazine (USA). Joseph has broadcast for BBC Radio 3, appearing on In Tune ahead of his all-Sibelius recital at St John’s Smith Square in 2015. Other recent highlights have included recitals at the Sendesaal in Bremen, St David’s Hall Cardiff, The Jacqueline du Pré Music Building in Oxford, and Newport Cathedral. Joseph has recently made a Schumann recording in Germany, due for release next year. A longstanding and highly successful piano duo with the Japanese pianist Waka Hasegawa (Piano 4 Hands) has led to broadcasts for Radio 3, WFMT Radio in the USA and recitals at major venues such as Wigmore Hall, The Purcell Room, Bridgewater Hall Manchester, St David’s Hall Cardiff and festivals including Buxton, Cheltenham, Chichester, Oundle and Presteigne. Piano 4 Hands has made a series of critically acclaimed CD recordings on the Quartz label of Debussy, Schubert and John McCabe. Joseph Tong and Waka Hasegawa recently commissioned a new work from David Matthews which they premiered at last year’s Cheltenham Music Festival and also performed at the newly reopened Purcell Room in London in July 2018. Joseph was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (ARAM) in 2008 and appointed visiting teacher at Wells Cathedral School the same year. Future engagements include concerts at the Presteigne Festival, St George’s Bristol, Newport Cathedral and Luton Music Club. www.josephtong.co.uk |
