Henriëtte Bosmans (1895-1952)

Henriëtte Bosmans
Dutch pianist and composer Henriëtte Bosmans was born to a family of professional musicians. She began teaching piano aged 17, and from then performed regularly at the Concertgebouw.
At the shock of her fiancé, violinist Francis Koene’s, sudden death from a brain tumour in 1935 Henriëtte stopped composing. Under the Nazi occupation, from August 1942, she was barred from working as she was half-Jewish.
After the war Henriëtte resumed concert work and composition and was a busy letter-writer with composer friends, including Benjamin Britten. She composed in the modern style, inspired mostly by Debussy, with an impressionistic polytonality she acquired form her orchestration tutor, William Pijper.

Rachel Watson
Cellist Rachel Watson enjoys a busy and varied freelance career. A graduate of the University of Oxford and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Rachel has studied with cellists including Alice Neary, Rebecca Gilliver and Jonathan Manson. She performs as both a modern and baroque cellist, and has particular interest in historically informed performance and contemporary music.
In 2017, Rachel founded the Scordatura Collective, a flexible chamber ensemble dedicated to performing music composed by women. She has particularly enjoyed getting to know the music of baroque composers such as Elizabeth Jacquet de la Guerre and Barbara Strozzi, as well as a wide range of music by more recent composers.
Last year Scordatura commissioned a major new work to mark the centenary of women’s suffrage, generously supported by the Hinrichsen Foundation, RVW Trust, Exuberant Trust and Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation. They also reached the final of Nonclassical’s ‘Battle of the Bands’ competition for new and experimental music, and were awarded a commendation.
As an orchestral player, Rachel recently toured China with the London Arte Chamber Orchestra and was a founding member of Street Orchestra Live, an innovative orchestra taking music outside of the concert hall. She has performed at venues including St Martin in the Fields and St John’s Smith Square, and appeared as a soloist with the Orchestra of the University of Alicante as part of the 2016 Perugia Music Festival.

Thomas Ang
Pianist Thomas Ang studied at the Royal Academy of Music with Hamish Milne and Diana Ketler, and at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama with Andrew West and Eugene Asti. He has won prizes for his performances of Beethoven, Frederick Delius, Arthur Bliss and the contemporary piano repertoire, and has been praised for his thoughtful and critical programming and excellent technique.
He has also earned recognition as a specialist in the music of Nikolai Kapustin, having played and conducted world premieres of his compositions in the UK, US, Singapore, Australia and Taiwan.
With a strong interest in contemporary music, Thomas has performed John Cage at the Purcell Room and Boulez at the Aldeburgh Music Festival. His piano duo (Duo Ex Libris) performed the complete non-sonata piano works of Boulez, including the two books of Structures in London; they have also played various recital programmes in Australia and around the UK and made multiple
appearances on Radio 3.
In other chamber groups he maintains a strong interest in unusual repertoire of the late Romantic, as well as mid-20th-century British music. He has worked with conductors such as Susanna Mälkki, Clement Power, Sian Edwards and Jonathan Berman as well as composers Oliver Knussen, John Adams and Nikolai Kapustin in playing their music. He has also played in classes by Stephen Hough, Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Imogen Cooper, Kathryn Stott and Yevgeny Sudbin among others.
Off the concert stage, Thomas works as a répétiteur and ballet pianist. He sometimes accompanies and improvises for silent film, appearing at various festivals and events. Thomas also plays the violin, and writes poetry and piano transcriptions of songs and symphonies.

The major work in today's concert comes from the Dutch composer Henriëtte Bosmans. A friend of Benjamin Britten, she refused to join the Nazi Kulturkammer during the occupation of the Netherlands, and being half Jewish was forbidden to work.
