Gus McQuade
Gus McQuade is a classical guitarist from Leamington Spa, currently doing a masters at the Royal Academy of Music. He is the current holder of the Musicians’ Company’s prestigious New Elizabethan Award 2022/23 and recently gave his debut at Wigmore Hall. Other recent awards include the Blyth Watson Award and Timothy Gilson Prize, as well as runner up in the Leicester Music Competition and Royal Classics Guitar Concerto Prize.
Gus has also been generously awarded scholarships from the Drake Calleja Trust, Help Musicians and Royal Academy of Music for his masters.
Gus performs regularly both as a soloist and chamber musician, with recent concerts at some of the UK’s most prestigious venues including the Southbank’s Purcell Room, Kings Place, St Bartholemew-the-great and Surrey Hills Music Festival. He also has various concerts lined up for this summer, with festivals including Dillington House Festival, Bath Guitar Festival and Petworth Festival with his duo partner Eleanor Grant (double bass & voice).
Whilst studying at the Academy Gus has performed in masterclasses with some of the world’s leading guitarists, including David Russell, Fabio Zanon, Roberto Aussel and Xeufei Yang, as well as with lutenist Nigel North. Gus is passionate about expanding the guitar repertoire and regularly collaborates with composers. He is also a keen arranger, often writing for his various chamber music ensembles, drawing upon an eclectic range of music including Pat Metheny, Joni Mitchell, Elizabethan Lute music and lesser known art songs from the 20th/21st century.
This Summer Gus and his duo partner Eleanor Grant will be recording their debut album with the independent label Deux-Elles. They will also be appearing at the Ham Farm Festival near Bristol where the organisers are the guitarist Francisco Correa and flautist Emily Andrews - both familiar figures at Music on Thursdays concerts.
