The Torridon Piano Trio comprises 3rd year students of the Royal Academy of Music, Laura MacDonald, cello, Iona McDonald, violin and Kirsty Chaplin, piano.
They formed the Torridon in September 2017 and have enjoyed learning an extensive range of repertoire and taking part in performances and competitions. The Academy has presented them with many wonderful performance opportunities which include participating in the Isaacs and Pirani Piano Trio Prize, performing as part of the Royal Academy of Music Piano Trio day and giving a recital as part of the prestigious Royal Academy of Music Piano Festival in June 2018.
They have enjoyed coaching with Ian Brown and Michael Dussek on repertoire that includes Shostakovich Piano Trio No 2, Mendelssohn, Debussy and Beethoven.
Recent highlights include masterclasses with viola player and chamber music specialist Hartmut Rohde and RAM Professor of Violin Gyorgy Pauk, private concerts in London and a concert as part of the Amazing Women of the Academy concert series in February of this year. Torridon are pleased to have been selected to perform in the For Crying Out Loud series at the Wigmore Hall this Autumn.
Laura, Iona, and Kirsty all have links to Scotland, which led to the choice of the name Torridon for the trio.
