Hugh Millington
Hugh Millington is a classical guitar scholar at the Royal Academy of Music in London. There he studies with Michael Lewin, as well as regularly receiving lessons from world-renowned performers David Russell and Fabio Zanon. He has also studied with numerous others in both masterclasses and private lessons, including David Leisner, Xuefei Yang, and Zoran Dukic.
Hugh has performed in many solo recitals, ensemble concerts, and festivals across the country, including at St Barnabas Cathedral Nottingham, Menuhin Hall, West Dean Guitar Festival, and the Winchester Guitar Festival.
He enjoys using a number of different guitars in a concert in order to provide exciting contrasts between different styles and periods within music. These include a number of different nineteenth-century guitars, a terz guitar, and guitars with more than six strings, including a seven-string guitar and a fifteen-string Kontragitarre. His fascination with nineteenth-century instruments is driven by a love of guitar music from this era, and a desire to present it in the most exciting and convincing ways.
His strong interest in chamber music has led Hugh to work in a number of different ensembles, including playing regularly in a duo with violin; playing ambitious arrangements as well as original works for guitar and violin.
Hugh regularly performs with singers, accompanying songs on various instruments, including 19th Century songs on period instruments, and also has arranged numerous songs for guitar and voice, including Schubert's songs based on verse from Shakespeare, which were performed at the Royal Academy of Music for the 400th year anniversary Concert for Shakespeare's death.
Originally from Nottingham, Hugh regularly performs in the East Midlands and has appeared as a concerto soloist with orchestras in this area numerous times to perform Giuliani’s Concerto Op 30, Carulli’s Concerto Op 140, and Vivaldi’s Concerto RV 93. Future concerto engagements include Giuliani's incredible Concerto in F major for Terz guitar and orchestra, in 2018.

Next we hear Luys de Narváez Seys differencias de contrapunto sobre “O gloriosa Domina” Six differences (ie, variations) on the sacred hymn O gloriosa Domina. The guitar-player is Costin Soare, performing in the George Enescu National Museum, Bucharest, Romania, in 2014:
This is the first time we have heard the work of the 18th century Viennese lutenist and composer Karl Kohaut in these concerts. In our recording of the three movements of the D major Sonata we shall hear the guitar-playing of Gérard Reyne, himself an arranger and composer of works for the guitar:
Michael Berkeley's Impromptu was written in 1983 as a homage to Julian Bream, on the guitarist's 50th birthday. Unfortunately I could find no recording of it online. For a taste of Michael Berkeley let's hear instead his Concerto for Cello and Small Orchestra. The soloist is Alban Gerhardt, with the BBC National Symphony Orchestra of Wales:
Our concert closes with the 19th century composer Napoléon Coste's Fantasie dramatique Le départ / Le retour. Le départ reflects the 1854 departure of the French Army for the Siege of Sebastopol, while Le retour represents the troops' victorious return, 11 months later in 1855.
