Gwenllian Llŷr
Welsh harpist Gwenllian Llŷr is quickly gaining international recognition for her charismatic and engaging performances. In 2013, Gwenllian was a prize-winner at the triennial USA International Harp Competition in Bloomington, Indiana, where she was highly praised for her musicianship and her ability to connect with audiences. She has also won many prizes more locally, including the Blue Ribbon at the National Eisteddfod Genedlaethol in Wales in 2012, and the First Prize of the UK Camac Harp Competition in 2010.
Gwenllian graduated with First Class Honours from Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and a Master of Music from The Juilliard School, where she was also awarded the William Schuman prize for outstanding achievement and leadership in music. She was later the first to complete an Advanced Diploma in Harp at the Royal Academy of Music in London.
Her career has taken her across the globe with performances in prestigious venues such as Cardiff's St David’s Hall, Buckingham Palace, Carnegie Hall and the Royal Albert Hall, and alongside renowned artists including jazz legend Al Jarreau, actor Mathew Rhys, and international opera singer Bryn Terfel. Gwenllian relishes the chance to display the harp’s versatility, with recent performances including: a solo recital on the Ffestiniog Railway for Live Music Now; a programme of contemporary works for soprano and harp at Cardiff University; a concerto performance with the Orchestra of St John’s at St John’s Smith Square; a harp and cello duo of Saint-Saëns The Swan with a dancer at Kensington Palace.
Alongside her blossoming performing career, Gwenllian is a committed teacher, be it as a private harp teacher, a leader of a workshop, a test subject for composers and their new music, or in public masterclasses where her tips can help both the harpist and the audience. She has over a decade of experience teaching students of all levels, abilities and ages, and loves helping her students reach their potential and foster their love of music and the harp. In addition, Gwenllian enjoys composing and arranging music for herself and her students to play, enabling harpists to develop their technique through fun and imaginative pieces. She currently teaches privately in Orpington and North London, as well as for King’s College of Music and the Latymer Music Centre.

To round off our concert we hear the first three movements from Pearl Chertok's Around the Clock Suite - Ten Past Two - Beige Nocturne - Harpicide at Midnight. The harpist in the recording on the left is Nina Kupriyanova, performing in the Great Hall of Moscow State Conservatory.
On the right, you can hear Pearl Chertok herself from a recording on red vinyl 78s, perhaps from around 1950. There is some distortion due to warp on one of the discs. This recording includes the fourth movement The Morning After.
