David Oldfield
David Oldfield was born and educated in Sheffield, at King Edward VII School. He was offered an unconditional place at the Royal Northern College of Music where he furthered his organ, singing and choral training studies.
David worked in education for many years (often as Head of Music) has held several successful posts as organist and choirmaster and as a teacher of organ, piano and singing. As a performer, he has been organ recitalist, continuo player and accompanist. He has performed several roles on Royal School of Church Music courses since 1977 and more recently has been a member of the Advisory Board to the RSCM Council as well as being currently, an examiner for Bishops’ and Deans’ Awards.
David specialises in early music, Baroque music and 20th/21st century music but has an eclectic taste and wide repertoire outside this period. He made a special study of Tudor Church Music and also the vast choral repertoire of church music.
David has recently formed the choir Stag Montem Chorem who have already sung in Guildford and Portsmouth Cathedrals and he is Director of Music at St Luke, Whyteleafe, Surrey and Hon Associate Director of St Denys, Rotherfield. David is actively pursuing his interests as a recitalist and when time permits, can still be found driving buses and coaches, in particular vintage buses.

The Christ Church organ was built by Hill, Norman & Beard in 1970 with 16 stops, using some pipes from previous organs plus some neo-baroque sounds typical of the 1960's and '70's (Chimney Flute and Fifteenth on open-foot voicing, like the Royal Festival Hall organ). In 1995, HNB moved some loud stops from the Great to a new double case in the nave, 6 stops were added, and the tone was refined. In summer 2015 the nave organ was re-voiced to produce a more robust tone. |
Organic Medley (Haibunga)
public recital every detail on view nowhere to hide |
Pillar and pulpit fully conceal the organist; but modern technological wizardry displays a complete and dynamic image on the big screen – all minutiae recorded. (An unexpected gift for the artist, sketchbook in hand.) Stocky figure leans back slightly, grizzled face shows total absorption in the music.
Baroque and modern dexterity, hand and foot Yorkshire grit |
Multi-tasking, with two manuals, and a row of stops, he nods to the page-turner, whose deft hand floats across the screen, before retreating once again into the shadows. Disembodied sound fills the church, vibrates to its very core.

David Oldfield's recital opens with Dubois' Toccata in G major. The organist here is Olivier Penin, at the Cavaillé-Coll organ in St-Clotilde Basilica, Paris:
Victor Contreras is President of the Asociación Mexicana de Organistas. Here he plays the Duo, Trio and Basses et Dessus de Trompettes from Clérambault's Suite du Premier Ton (the first being C major). Sr Contreras has held a post in Paris at the Church of Saint-Antoine-des-Quatre-Vingts, but that is clearly not the organ he pays here.
Mendelssohn's Choral & Variation on Herzlich tut mir verlangen has a theme you will recognise as 'O Sacred Head, Sore Wounded'. It is played here by Christoph Albrecht on a clavichord which he built.
For Hindemith's Sonata for Organ No 2 we have a recording in which you can follow the musical score.
Simone Gheller here plays the Flentrop organ in the Warner Concert Hall, Oberlin College, Ohio. Oberlin is a unique institution in that it brings together a College of Arts & Sciences, and a Conservatoire of Music. Apparently the College owns over 230 Steinway pianos !

In calmer mood, we turn to Italy, and a performance by Luca Rosso on the organ in Messina Cathedral.
Marco Enrico Bossi was an organist of considerable note, holding posts at Como Cathedral, and in the Conservatoires of Naples, Venice, Bologna and Rome. This is his Ave Maria:

Our closing work is JS Bach's Prelude and Fugue in C minor, BWV 546. Here Ulf Norberg is playing the 1969 Grönlunds organ in Hedvig Eleonora Church, Stockholm (Queen Hedvig Eleonora Church).
The organ contains several ranks from its predecessor 1868 Per Larsson Åkermans organ.
