David Massey
David studied at the Royal Academy of Music. He has performed at the Wigmore Hall, Purcell Room, Sage Gateshead, King's Place, St Martin in the Fields, amongst others, and premièred several new works. He was a finalist in the 2006 BBC Young Musician competition.
David's wide ranging musical interests allow him to span genres and styles from classical to rock in roles ranging from soloist and member of small chamber ensembles to orchestras. His solo performances have been described as “intense and intimate”, marked by a “remarkable energy and range of tone and dynamics”. Julian Bream has praised his sound and communication of musical structure.
He has a particular interest in transcriptions and collaboration, and has an ongoing duo partnership with flautist Emily Andrews www.andrewsmasseyduo.com, with whom he has released three acclaimed CDs. Their video of David's arrangement of Schubert's Standchen reached over 80,000 views on YouTube, making it one of the most watched flute and guitar videos, and the sheet music has been downloaded all around the world.
David teaches privately and in schools across North London.

Leatherhead Concert & Arts Society - living up to our name!
Each week one or two artists from Leatherhead Art Club come along to sketch during the concerts. They are pretty unobtrusive sorts, so nobody minds. In fact audience and artistes alike enjoy looking over their work at the end of the concert.
The poetic muse generally takes a little longer to strike, or at least to reach its fruition. This week, the muse struck Peter Steadman rather than Resident Poet, Peter Horsfield:

Inspired by David Massey’s guitar concert in Leatherhead Methodist Church, in the Music on Thursdays lunchtime series on Thursday 30th July. David was seated on a small platform so that more of the audience would be able to see him perform. There was almost enough room for him to sit and play with comfort, but as he said himself – David has played on smaller platforms.

Next we hear the Andante espressivo from Manuel Ponce's Sonata Romántica. If you have time to listen to
the full 21-minute Sonata then the recording on the right by Polish guitarist Marcin Dylla will be a delight.
At the concert we will hear just the one movement, played on this sound recording by another
Polish guitarist, the 20-yearold Piotr Przedbora.

At the concert we only have time to hear one of Pujol's Tres Piezas Españoles.
The soloist in the recording of Guajira on the left is Maud Laforest.
But if you are listening at home, in the office or on the move perhaps you would like to hear
all three of the Tres Piezas Españoles. Here on the right is a fine recording by Máximo Pérez Risco
