Gillian Lloyd

Gillian Lloyd was born in Portsmouth. She began piano studies at the age of six,
taking up the ‘cello at eleven. She studied at the Royal Academy of Music with
Sidney Harrison and Derek Simpson, and subsequently worked for some years as a
‘cello teacher for Hampshire Education Authority.

Gillian began to play the organ as an adult, studying with Carey Humphreys and Jack Evans, and more recently with Andrew Millington, Anne Marsden Thomas and Stephen Farr. She holds the FRCO and LRAM (organ teaching) diplomas. Gillian came to Guildford in 1988, upon her marriage to Jeff (at Holy Trinity Church, where Gillian played the organ), and was appointed Organist and Choirmaster (later Director of Music) at Guildford URC.

She has given a number of recitals in the Guildford area and in some of the London churches, including Southwark Cathedral, in addition to her church work and private teaching.

The Christ Church organ was built by Hill, Norman & Beard in 1970 with 16 stops, using some pipes from previous organs plus some neo-baroque sounds typical of the 1960's and '70's (Chimney Flute and Fifteenth on open-foot voicing, like the Royal Festival Hall organ).

In 1995, HNB moved some loud stops from the Great to a new double case in the nave, 6 stops were added, and the tone was refined. In summer 2015 the nave organ was re-voiced to produce a more robust tone.

Diane Bish draws a far larger crowd than our own little recitals! Here she is with Stanley's Trumpet Voluntary, pating on the 5-manual, 117 rank, Ruffati organ at Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church, Fort Lauderdale, Florida:

at the International Organ Festival of Santa Rita, Turin, Italy:

David Philp plays this, more contemplative piece, on the organ in Redruth Methodist Church, Cornwall. The original 2-manual organ was built by William Sweetland in 1857, at a cost of £300, contributed largely by a local tin mine owner and three MPs. In 1901 Hele & Co of Plymouth added the choir, and further augmented the instrument in 1938. Itsmost recent refurbishment was in 2007.

For the Gigout I have chosen great Cavaillé-Coll organ in St-Sulpice, Paris. The invitation to play this instrument is the sole gift of Organiste Titulaire Daniel Roth, and there he is sitting beside Alana Brook, singing along, and commenting as she performs:

At the organ of St Mary's Cathedral, Sydney, New South Wales, we hear Joshua Ryan. Having held key scholar posts in Sydney, and following studies at Oxford University and in Holland, these days Joshua is a freelance organist, accompanist, and teacher in Sydney and Canberra:
