Samuel Lom is a Masters student at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama under the tutelage of Janice Chapman, having studied at the University of Warwick and Humboldt-Universitat zu Berlin.
This year Samuel performed Prince Yamadori (Madame Butterfly) and Father (Hansel and Gretel) at the Iford Arts Festival. Other opera credits include Figaro (Le Nozze di Figaro), Seneca (L’Incoronazione di Poppea), Morales/Zuniga (Carmen), Father (Hansel and Gretel) for Opera Warwick; Leporello (Don Giovanni) for Hampstead Garden Opera; Papageno (Die Zauberflöte) for Midland Opera; Conte (Le Nozze di Figaro) for the International Bel Canto Academy; Pluton (Hippolyte et Aricie) for Ensemble OrQuesta and Polyphemus (Acis and Galatea) for Ad Parnassum. Recent solo choral engagements include Mozart’s Coronation Mass and Requiem, Haydn’s Nelson Mass, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solenelle, Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms and Tippett’s A Child of Our Time. Samuel also regularly performs with the Philharmonia Chorus in various venues around Europe. Samuel will perform the baritone solo in Howard Goodall’s Eternal Light: A Requiem this November at a World War Centenary concert. |
Bulgarian pianist Raya Kostova began playing the piano at the age of four. At the early age of 11 she made her concerto debut with the Bulgarian Chamber Orchestra playing Bach - Piano Concerto in D. While studying at the National School of Arts in her home city of Varna she became a laureate of few piano competition, she was awarded a prize by the Mayor for her personal achievements, a Diploma for excellence by the Minister of Culture and made her first appearance with the Varna Symphony Orchestra. She was also able to work with musicians such as Boris Bloch and Yuri Bukov.
Raya received the Elsie Prater Award in 2009 to study at the Royal Academy of Music where she was taught by Tatiana Sarkissova and participated in many major master classes with acclaimed musicians like Pascal Devoyon, Stephen Hough, Thomas Brandis and Robert Cohen. She has already performed in some of the UK's most prestigious venues such as the Cadogan Hall, Wigmore Hall and Holywell Music Room. Raya is regular guest of the National Bulgarian radio and gives concerts throughout the UK and Europe, recently performing recitals for the 'Armonie della Magna Graecia' festival in Italy.
In 2012 Raya was awarded the Cedar Trust Award to study at the Britten-Pears Russian Song Masterclass with Joan Rogers and Roger Vignoles and a scholarship to participate in Oxford Lieder Master Course led by Wolfgang Holzmair. In the summer she was given the Dartington Trust scholarship to study with Stephen Kovacevich as part of Dartington International Summer School.
In 2013, Raya was awarded the Kathleen Creed and TCL scholarships to take up her place on the Postgraduate Diploma course at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music to study with Mikhail Kazakevich and is continuing her studies on the Artist Diploma course this year. She is generously supported by the Sheepdrove Trust and is a Beverley Creed Scholar. In March 2015 Raya won the prestigious Una Clark Young Artist Competition and performed Chopin's 1st Piano concerto with the Guildford Symphony Orchestra. Raya is a keen chamber musician and performs regularly with her husband, baritone Thomas Humphreys.

This is the earliest song in today's concert, so perhaps it is appropriate to hear the earliest recording ever used in these Concert at Home examples. American baritone Reinald Werrenrath was the son of a Danish tenor and singing tutor who settled in the USA. Reinald (or 'Werry' to his friends) made this recording of My Lovely Celia on 21st June 1929:
Fleur de Bray
The drawback when we hear a premiere at a concert is that there is, of course, no existing recording.
Here instead is a recording of Fleur de Bray singing Ravel's Le Feu (Fire) from L'enfant et les sortilèges (The Child and the Spells). Her pianist is none other than Samuel Lom's accompanist today, Raya Kostova:

Because
Because seems to have been a popular wedding song as late as the 1950s. Here are two different interpretations, both with orchestra. On the left we hear Andrea Bocelli, on the right, and many feel this is the best ever, Mario Lanza:

The song appears in the first act of South Pacific, sung by the male lead, Emile de Becque. In the 1958 film Emile was played by Rossano Brazzi, but Some Enchanted Evening was voiced by Metropolitan Opera bass Giorgio Tozzi:
