David Oldfield
David Oldfield was born and educated in Sheffield, at King Edward VII School. He was offered an unconditional place at the Royal Northern College of Music where he furthered his organ, singing, and choral training studies.
David’s work in education has included time as Head of Music at St Georges College Junior School (Weybridge), several successful posts as organist and choirmaster and as a teacher of organ, piano, and singing. He is also an active organ recitalist. He has worked on Royal School of Church Music courses since 1977 and more recently has been a member of the Advisory Board to the RSCM Council as well as currently, an examiner for Bishops’ and Deans’ Awards.
David specialises in early music, Baroque music and 20th/21st century music but has an eclectic taste and wide repertoire outside these periods. He made a special study of Tudor Church Music and also the vast choral repertoire of church music.
David is actively pursuing his interests as a recitalist and, as a past President of Surrey Organists' Association, is interested in education and outreach. When time permits, David can be found driving buses and coaches, in particular vintage buses.

The Christ Church organ was built by Hill, Norman & Beard in 1970 with 16 stops, using some pipes from previous organs plus some neo-baroque sounds typical of the 1960's and '70's (Chimney Flute and Fifteenth on open-foot voicing, like the Royal Festival Hall organ). In 1995, HNB moved some loud stops from the Great to a new double case in the nave, 6 stops were added, and the tone was refined. In summer 2015 the nave organ was re-voiced to produce a more robust tone. |

Herbert Howell's Psalm Prelude Set 1 No 1 was written at a time of particular sorrow for the composer. The text from Psalm 34:6 fits that mood: "This poor man cried out, and the Lord heard him, and saved him out of his troubles.' We hear a graduate recital of the work by Dustin Tatro, in the Epsicopal Church of Heavenly Rest, Abilene, Texas.
With such a preponderance of gentleman organists in these pages, I was delighted to find this recording of
the Bach Prelude and Fugue in G, BWV 541, with
Aude Schumacher at the organ in the Protestant Temple, Nancy, France:
